PROPOSED PETROL TAXES
PROTEST FROM MOTORISTS. By I'elcgraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Lafet Night. A deputation representing the. New Zealand Motorists’ Association interviewed the Prime Minister to-day. to protest against any increased taxation. Mr. W. G. Walkley said the motorists contended that if a good many of the counties amalgamated the resulting economy In a<linini<strillion would bo sufficient to meet much of the inci cased expenditure. Ninety-two per cent, of the petrol tax was spent on the country roads and 8 per cent, on city roads. A vast amount was being contributed annually by city motor-owners, who seldom or never used country roads. Mr. Forbes said a deputation of farmers had asked for the de-rating of lands and an increase in the petrol tax, but he wanted to hear what the motorists had to say. The increasing of taxation was an unpleasant task for any Government, but the adverse conditions had to be faced. He would give the points raised serious consideration.
