MANAIA SCHOOL COMMITTEE

HIGH COST OF DENTAL CLINIC. The Manilla School Committee met on Wednesday evening. Present:, The Rev. R. Miller (chairman), Messrs. T. A. Bridge, G. H. Butler, J. T, Clague, N. W. Scowii, G. 11. Edwards, C. Sole and W. Vincent. The headmaster, Mr. J. Nairn, reported that for June the primary roll was 241 (average 225) and the secondary roll was 46 (average 44.5), Having received promotion under the Wellington Education Board as a grade 2 assistant at Shannon school Miss M. Bayly will sever her connection with the Manaia school on July 31. The Education Board advised that the total cost of the dental clinic erected at Manaia was £lBl ss, the Manaia district’s share being £6O 8s 4d. The sum of £5O had already been received and a request was made for the balance, £lO 8s 4d. Members considered that the clinic had been very costly. It was anticipated that £l5O would have been ample to cover the cost. It was decided to make a request from the contributing schools to pay their share on. th 6 proportion of pupils being- treated. ‘ The ' Education Board advised that £3B 18s 8d capitation allowance for June quarter had been paid to the committee's account. It was resolved to write thanking Miss Bayly, infant mistress, for her services during the past four years, members expressing appreciation of her work., It was suggested that this be recognised in a tangible manner and the matter was referred to the headmaster, the chairman and the treasurer. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Clague for his work on a fence at the grounds. A suggestion from the teachers that an Encylopaedia Brittanica be procured for the library was considered and deferred till the next meeting, MANAIA FIRE BRIGADE. The annual meeting, of the Manaia Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday evening, a good muster of members being present, together with several citizens. Superintendent White, in his report of the past year’s activities, gave a very satisfactory account of the state of the brigade’s equipment. He also dwelt on the good feeling and discipline existing among the brigade members. There had been only one call during the year and as that fire was situated outside the town area very little could be done to eave the building. The appointments of officers were made and at the conclusion of the business all those present partook of the refreshments provided and a short toast list was enjoyed, interspersed by vocal and elocutionary items. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. L. J. Michel, who was transferred recently from the Eltham Post Office staff to Feilding _as exchange clerk, was presented prior to his departure with a fountain pen from his fellow workers as a mark of esteem. .. .Mr. A. K. Neilson, of the Hawera railway staff, left yesterday on transfer to Thorndon Mr. and Mrs. P. Zimmerman, Palmer Road, left Hawera” yesterday for Wellington, en route to Switzerland, where they will spend an extended holiday. The funeral of the late Mr. Edward Schildliauer took place at the Hawera cemetery on Wednesday afternoon with Druidie honours. Born at Moutere, Nelson, in 1872, Mr. Sebildhauer came to South Taranaki many years ago to. take up farming 'Ursuits, being associated with the late ME T. H. Foy and then with the late Mr. J. F. Pease’. One of the foundation members of the Hawera Druids’ Lodge, he remained one of its most enthusiastic members until his death occurred’. A bachelor, Mr. Schildhauer leaves two brothers, Joseph (Eltham) and August (Nelson) and two sisters, Miss E. Schildhauer (New Plymouth), and Mrs. Marshall (Nelson).
