SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. At a meeting of the Normanby School Committee on Tuesday night there were present Messrs. A. E. Spratt, E. T. Peach, T. Evans, T. Pickering, P. Linn, IV. H. McCaffrey and J. Somers. The chairman reported that members of the committee had cut the dividing hedge and had made a very satisfactory job of it. The visiting committee consisting of Messrs. Pickering and Linn reported that it had found everything satisfactory during the month with the exception that several feet had been broken off the top of the concrete fence. The repairing of tho fence was left to Messrs. Peach and Evans. The secretary was instructed to write to the Taranaki Education Board asking it to forward two bubbling fountains. > The headmaster, Mr- Davidson, reported as follows: The roil number is now’ 125. The average weekly attendances, for June were 121.1, 119.2, 116.6.. and 116.6. The dental clinic has again commenced treating the children one day a week. The chairman reported that. Bible ill* .fltructipn could now be given in the schools and tin Rev. H. Curran had offered to give instruction for one halfhour per week,...and he could also get someone to assist him if required. Bible instruction was proving satisfactory at other schools in the district. Lessons would start at 9 a.m. and any parents who objected need not send their children till 9.30 on the day instruction was given. A ' solution was passed that it be given a trial at Normanby and that Mr. Curran be asked to take the classes which will commence on July 24. The euchre parties being held in aid of the school funds are proving very successful, there being a credit of about £l2 from the three. Mr. McCaffrey donated one prize for the next competition, and prizes have also been offered by Messrs. T. Parrish, P. ,Scheubcr and Norfolk and Sons.. It was’decided that the next tournament be the final for this: season, when the points prizes would be given. It was decided to ask the Hawera Scottish Society to , arrange a concert at Normanby in aid of the school funds, and it was left with Mr. Pickering to make arrangements. Messrs. Peach and Evans were appointed a visiting committee for the month. NORMANBY TOWN BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the Town Board there were present: Messrs. C. J. Preston (chairman), A. Mills and A. Galloway. A letter was received from the South Taranaki Automobile Association enclosino' copiefl of two reports dealing with cyclists riding without lights and with wandering stock. A motion was passed that the board was in eympathy with the association, but etating that not one of the instances quoted had been within the Normanby town district. No mention was made in the reports of the number of motor-cars with only one light or ones on which the lights were badly focussed, and in the opinion of the board these were quite as dangerous to traffic as wandering stock or cyclists without lights. The New Zealand Alliance forwarded a resolution passed by the executive committee in connection with intoxicating liquor being allow’ed in dance halls and cabarets, A motion was passed that the board was in sympathy with the letter for no doubt in some instances the practice did exist, but this did not apply to Normanby, for as far as could be ascertained no liquor was consumed at the dances held there.

The secretary of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association wrote intimating that a special meeting of the association would be held at Eltham on July 25 to review the system of distribution of heavy traffic fees and arrange for bitumen supplies. Miss Carter and Miss O'Hagan. . SCOTTISH SOCIETY SOCIAL. A social held recently by tho Patca and District Scottish Society was a pronounced success. Musical items were rendered by members of the society and visitors. The choir, which has reached an astonishingly high standard since it,s recent formation, rendered a series of items which drew well-earned applause. The Kaponga operetta company has offered to donate portion of the net proceeds of the forthcoming production of "Princees of Poppyland” to worthy causes. These have been allocated •as follows: Kaponga Plunket Society, Manaia Orchestral Society, and Opunake Seaside Society. A fancy-dress ball for children will be held at Kaponga this evening, the function being in aid of the school funds. A similar entertainment will also be held at Auroa this evening. GENERAL ITEMS. So successful was the recent Anglican Church fancy-dress ball at Eltham that a profit of £27 was made. ’ A’ similar amount has been received from a series of. euchre parties. The efforts of the vestry to reduce the debt on the church are being well rewarded. Special decorations of the Eltham Town Hail are being arranged by the staff of the Farmers Co-operative Society for the annual ball to be held this evening. The supper arrangements are being carefully attended to and a first-class dance orchestra has been engaged. Admission is for invitation holders only, and those desirous of obtaining invitations are notified that’ these may be obtained from, branches, of tho society. ’
