FARMERS' COMPETITIONS
TOKO DISTRICT RESULTS, IMPROVEMENT IN ENSILAGE. Judging in the’ farmers' hay and ensilage competitions was continued on Wednesday in the Toko district by Messrs. J, M. Smith and C. Haynes, of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, and, it was noticed, there was an all-round improvement in the quality of the ensilage, proving that the more liberal' use of manures , was improving the pastures, and that the farmers as a result of the competitions had gleaned much valuable information in relation to making silage generally. Another feature very satisfactory to the judges was the excellent manner in which the majority of the stocks had been covered. The quantity of earth used had not been stinted, and this resulted in waste being reduced to a minimum. Hay owing, of course, to the unfavourable climatic conditions prevailing at harvest time, was not up to the standard of some previous years.A number of settlers accompanied the judges, and during the day many questions were asked. Mr. and Mrs. G. Marfell, Mr. and Mrs. A. Marfell and Mr. and Mrs. Rowe entertained members of the party to luncheon, and a large number of ladies dispensed afternoon tea at the hall.
