RESCUE FROM DROWNING
j GIRL'S PLUCKY ACTION. < YOUNG MAN SAVED IN LAKE, ] A few mornings ago a young man, Mr, R. J. MacKenzie, employed on Walter Peak station, nearly lost his life by drowning in Lake Wakatipu. - The steamer Ben Lomond had made f her regular call at Beach Bay and as she was moving out again Mr. MacKenzie, who had gone on board to talk to a j passenger, made an attempt to jump back on the wharf. In doing so he fell into the lake, which is 20ft to 25ft deep ( at this spot. He was unable to swim ( and the danger of his position was in- j creased by the easterly wind which was g blowing and by the wash caused by the £ propeller of the steamer. £ In answer to an alarm raised by the E group of people collected on the wharf, ( Miss Peggy MacKenzie, a daughter of ( Major P. MacKenzie, quickly removed £ her frock and swam out to Mr. Mac Ke- j zio’s assistance. Gripping hold of his r _ wrist, she struck back for the shallow 1 water, where her father and one of the 1 station workers were waiting to give < assistance. < Had it not been for Miss MacKenzie’s 1 pluck and presence of mind, a fatality would have occurred. Miss MacKenzie is 1 only 18 years old. From an early age < she has been a good swimmer.
