CYCLE ROAD RACING

HAWERA CLUB’S EVENTS. Despite unpleasant weather conditions fa£t times were recorded in the Hawera Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s road cycle race yesterday. The course was about 28 miles in length, being through Normanby to Okaiawa and back through Manaia. Results are: A. Dredge (15Jmin), Ihr ISmin 30sec 1 K. Foy (Binin), Ihr 12min 33sec .. 2 E. This is believed to constitute a record, and though Griffin conceded starts up to Iffjmin he finished close up fourth. Mr, J. Dredge, sen., conveyed the supervisors round the course in his ear. PERSONAL ITEMS. Having reached the age of retirement, Mr. J. headmaster of the Kaponga school, will relinquish his position towards the end of the year. The Taranaki Education Board yesterday expressed appreciation of his long services. Mr. K. Rouse, Hawera, leaves by today’s mail train for Wellington en route for England, where he intends to join the Royal Air Force. The death has occurred in London oi Mrs. P. B. Harris, who, as Miss Catherine Cook, was well-known at Hawera, beina the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cook. She leaves four daughters. Mr. Rigley Allan, Hawera, returned to his home en route to New Plymouth this week after spending two months on transfer with General Motois, Ltd., at Petone. Before leaving he was presented with a pocket wallet by members of the staff with whom he was associated. , • 1 Residents of the Wainrate Plains have learned with regret of the death of Mr. George James Bridge, Feildmg, eldest brother of Mr. T. A. Bridge, Manaia, which took place at his residence m his 63rd year after a lengthy illness borne patiently. The late Mr. Bridge was one of the pioneers of the Riverlea district, having farmed on Mangawhero Road about 40 years ago. He was a loyal Methodist and took a great interest in the work of the church. The pall-bearers at the funeral were the four brothers-Messrs. T. A. Bridge, W. W. Bridge, C. H. Bridge and E. K. Bridgc-aitf two nephews-Messrs. 8. Bridge (Gisborne) and R. Bridge (Feildin»). The Rev. J. Copeland officiated at the house and graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were laid on the casket. The late Mr. Bridge is survived by Ins widow and daughter, four brothers and one sister (Miss H. Bridge, Wanganui).

PATEA DOMAIN BOARD. Mr. E. F. Hemingway presided at the monthly meeting of the Domain Board when two applications were read for the use of the domain shed lor a skating rink. After discussion Messrs Jenkins and Ramsbottom were appointed a committee to analyse the whole question. , The unemployed committee wrote asking the board’s co-operation in relieving distress and thanked the board for its early application for a subsidy. Nothing, however, had been heard fiom the Public Works or Forestry Departments. It was decided to proceed with fencing immediately. The Tennis Club wrote expressing appreciation of the board’s attention to the courts. The tennis pavilion, it is understood, will be replaced by a new building next summer.

MATAPU NEWS. Tlie fortnightly euchre party was held in the Matapu hall on Tuesday. Although there was a big ball the next night there was a good crowd of card enthusiasts. The first prizes were won by Mrs. G. Hurley and Mr. L. Hoskin. Mrs. E. Scott and Mr. Watson won the second prizes. No dance was held aftei the euclire. Mr. T. Gatenby is spending a holiday at the residence of Mr. R. Gatenby. Mr. Gatenby is an inmate of an Eltham hospital. Mr. and Mrs. J. and Miss Irene O’Sullivan are spending a holiday in Wellington. Miss N. Donald, Morrinsville, is spending a few days with friends at Matapu. Mr. and Mrs. B. Harrison and Mr. and Mrs. A. Guy spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Guy. Mr. G. Scott, Kaimata, has been spending a few days with his sister, Mrs. R. Guy.
