Little), with K. M. Dunean’s Trouble second and R. E. Hatch’s Askari third. Won by two lengths, with twelve lengths between second and third. DON QUIXOTE WITHDRAWN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, July 16. Don Quixote was scratched for all engagements at the Grand National meeting at 9 a.m. GISBORNE MEETING. TODAY, /0/ SOME LIKELY CANDIDATES. (By “Moiuroa.”) The first race at Gisborne to-day starts at 11.30 a.m., the other events being timed to start at 12.15, 1.0, 1.45, 2.30, 3.15 and 4.0 p.m. * # # * Though he has not raced since running second to Maidos in the Hack Steeplechase at Wanganui twelve months ago, Highwayman is expected to play a big part in the decision of the steeplechases at Gisborne. The Tasmanian-bred jumper, it will be remembered, won very well at the Egmont winter meeting. * # # Twelve months ago King VVanga (9.4) and Queen’s Choice (9.7) won the Flying and Winter . Oats Handicaps respectively at the Gisborne winter meeting,

and these two are engaged in the same races to-day, being weighted at 0.11 and 10.2 respectively. ’#o 0 0 Last year Abisogne ran third in the Park Hurdles, at Gisborne, but to-day he meets a very much weaker field. Valsier, who showed good form at the minor-summer meetings on the Poverty Bay-Gisborne circuit, carrying big I weights up to ten furlongs, appears to I be not badly treated with 9.9 in the i Winter Oats at Gisborne to-dav. I o**o* At the Waipa meeting Merry Lu led for five and a half furlongs, but was narrowly beaten into third place. She has four pounds less in the Maiden at Gisborne to-day. An interesting acceptor at Gisborne to-day is Singleton, but the Autumn horse may not ‘be ready to show his best form. * 0 e * Royal Songster’s second to Lordlike at Napier Park should ensure him plenty of support in the hack sprint at Gisborne to-day. *oo# Bold Front appears in two races at file Gisborne meeting, which opens today, but the ten-furlong Winter Oats Handicap should see him at his best. A repetition of his form at Hastings would give him a winning chance. •“DOWN THE LINE.” (By ‘•'Paritutu.”) I Opa broke down again at Trentham, l and his case looks hopeless now. Aurora Borealis is the most discussed horse engaged in the Grand National Steeples. Matu showed improved form at Trentham, and, being partial to Riccarton, may go well. Nippy is looking bright and well, and I (report says) has been fencing well in ■ private at Bulls. ° I Coon Song is staying better now, and has won £430 in stakes since joining Rowley Hatch’s string at Awapuni. Mr. V. Edhouso informs the writer that Elysianor, who met with a mishap at Ellerslie, will be given a lengthy spell. If Llyn Du had earned a dividend in the Winter Oats at Trentham, instead of finishing third, there would have been some big winners down here. The Winter Cup field is an unwieldy one at present, but close observers of Trentham running give Mendip, Best Friend, Llyn Du and Havering more than rough chances. Point-to-point gatherings arc now our main attraction. Manawatu has held one and Rangitikei follows next Wednesday. • There are some fair hunters out thia season.

Mister Gamp was never a perfect jumper, but his pace carried him through. At Trentham he was produced in great nick, but came to grief when running well in the Winter Hurdles. His Grand National stock has slumped in consequence. Four members of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s committee, Messrs. G. C. Glenn, J. R. Fester, F. J. Nancarrow and 11. M. Speed, retire this time, but arc eligible for re-election. Additional nominations of Messrs. R. Grace and G. V. Pearce render an election necessary on July 30. On Saturday afternoon at Waverley the Egmont-Wanganui point-to-point gathering will be held. Good entries have been received for the four events, and good sport should be witnessed. Mosstrooper won the V.R.C. Grand National double, and many good judges are of opinion that Aurora Borealis has been given a great chance to repeat the feat at Riccarton next month. The mare is very well, and, being a very clsver jumper, the big fences should have no terrors for her.

Great interest is being taken in the jockeys’ premiership this season. Both Gray and Ellis will attend the Gisborne meeting, and after that there will only be two hunt club meetings in the south and one day of the Manawatu winter meeting before the curtain falls. Ellis is assured of good riding in Canterbury, and should make up leeway at “the smalls.” The championship is still in the balance. Fields for the Grand Nationals and the Winter Cup will be fined down tomorrow night, when acceptances close. Much of the “poor cattle” will be deleted then, and the public will be in a position to sum the likely ones up when owners have made their intentions public. Final payments are not due until August 7.

The popular Marton, jockey, Bert. Morris, is again well un in third place in the winning jockeys’ list, and appears to be riding as well as ever. Morris is not a “pot-hunter,” and does not go far away from his district unless to a big meeting. His weight is also a bar to the acceptance of many good mounts, and his winning average must compare favourably with those who have headed him on the premiership table. Another well-known Martonian, Fred Corlett, who has relinquished riding for some time now, la entering the ranks of trainers, and the Marton Jockey Club Committee has recommended him for a license. Fred knows all that there is to know about horses, particularly jumpers, and should not be long in getting a useful string together. He is a straight-goer, and commands respect as a. good judge of horse-flesh.
