Glorious weather favoured the Wellington Racing Club for the opening of its° winter meeting to-day. The course was good for the time of the year, thou'>h a trifle heavy. Trouble began earl/in the Vittoria for which Mountain Guide was favourite, Avro losing his rider.at the first jump. Zippor and Mountain Guide then went io the. front, but Zippor fell along the back and Mountain Guide ran home a winner by a. couple of lengths from Paris, ‘with Daylight a very poor third. But for' jumping badly Paris might have beaten Mountain Guide. CUMKUK TABLE FOR COUN SONG. Backers went solidly for Desert Song, Hunting Call and Gowan Lea in the Woburn Handicap. Abbey, Queen be- j gan best and led to the- course proper from Coon Song, . Portray, Tahoma, Hunting Call and Desert Song. Coon Sqng held his lead to beat Portray comfortably by three lengths, with Hunting Call a. length, away third just in front of Desert Song. Tahoma, Killigrew, Great Lady, Gowan Lea and Glen Rossie followed. Goon Song s ability to run out six furlongs was doubted. However, he stuck to his task well, never looking like being defeated. He will be hard to beat again at tne meeting. Blue Paper ran a fair race and sordid. Glenrpssie and Desorb Song. Gowan Lea was unlucky. HYMESTRASON PAYS A PRICE. The Awapuni-trained Hymcstrason made duffers J di the opposition in the' Matai Hack Steeplechase and paid a good price. .Wyeford cut out the run- . ning. but. with a mile to go Hymestrason had. collared hiin. Hymcstrason took the lead and drew away from Waitaunaha and Sir Moment to win with the greatest ease by five lengths from Sir Moment, who stayed on to beat WaiUunaha for second money. . Taramoa was fourth. Corneroff, who. .was going well at the time, and Wyeford fell along the back the last time. Red Bank was pulled up bleeding from the head. This was the second consecutive winner from R. Hatch's stable. DECISIVE WIN FOR CONSENT. A favourite prevailed when Consent won the Stewards’ Handicap. Limosin began very fast and was followed to the straight by Consent, Subdivision, Hopwood and Paddon. Consent was clear, at the false rail from Limosin, Paddon, Ilopwood, Mandy and .Kiosk. Consent; was holding Paddon and Hopwood when Paiko came at him. Consent beat Paiko by two lengths and a-half, with Paddon half a length away third. Hopwood ' was a cloee’ fourth, and Lady’s Boy, Marble King, Prince of Orange, Limosin and Havering were next. ’Havering and Hopwood may do better later'. They drew outside positions at the barrier to-day. Panther also should improve, while Limosin will be. the better for the race. UNLUCKY FOR AURORA BOREALIS. There was an exciting finish in the Wellington Steeplechase which Aurora Borealis was unlucky not to win. Master Lu went .to the lead at the start. After crossing the stand double the first time Mangani led Radiate, Matu, Master Lu, Odin, Aurora Borealis, Nukumai and Wharncliffe, with Flying Swift tailed off'. Radiate went up with Mangani in the back straight, otherwise there was little change. Over the double the next time Mangani was clear of Radiate, Aurora Borealis,,Matu, Wharn;cliffe. Master Lu, Nukumai, and Odin in close order. Matu fell at tlie sod wall, and Flying Swift was pulled up. Mangani .strode ,aw ; ay, frjun Aurora Bor'ealis five from, home, with Wharncliffe and Nukumai and Odin following at intervals. Mangani jumped the last fence several lengths ahead of Aurora Borealis, but was .tiring, and Aurora Borealis, keeping up her run, failed by only a nose. Master Lu was four lengths away third, with Radiate fourth. Wharncliffe fifth, Nukumai sixth and Odin last. Dulieu’s tactics in slipping the field won for Mangani. Aurora Borealis should soon collect another good stake. Radiate failed to stay. Master Lu ran promisingly. -Nukumai’s jumping was not good.

CUT-THROAT TACTICS FAIL. Prince Lu went to the front at a great pace in the Trentham Hurdles. Amorist went with him, and the pace beat both of them. Prince Lu gave in five furlongs from home and Amorist was left lengths clear of .Nucleus, Beaumont and Carinthia. Nucleus and Carinthia botli finished well, Nucleus winning by two lengths front Amorist, who had to be ridden right out to beat Carinthia by a head. Carinthia 1 should do well over a longer distance, and so should Mister Gamp, .whose finishing run was the feature; of .the race. Taumai ran off at the first- hurdle. BEST FRIEND STAYS IT OUT. A thrilling finish saw Best Friend win the Whyte Handicap by the narrowest of marg-ins. Two well fancied horses. Ranclagh and True Blood, were left at the start, and Blimp and Full Mark took the lead from Best Friend, Mendip and Marjoram. This was the order crossing the top, with Maui, Llyn Du ami Uhopin moving up, and there was little change at the entrance to the straight. For a moment Marjoram showed out, -then Best Friend, patiently handled, hit the front and Mendip came through on the rails. Mendip could not run on, and High Pitch came from the middle of the field to issue a determined challenge to Best Friend. A thrilling duel ensued, Gray getting Best Friend Home by a nose. Mendip was a good third, two lengths away, Marjoram fourth, and then- came Chopin, Blimp and Black Runners that are worth keeping in mind besides the placed horses, who should do well again, are Black Duke and Maui. TOWN MAJOR WINS VERY EASILY. The last race of the day, the Te Aro Handicap, was run in a mist, which

made visibility very bad. Brilliant Light, Singer, White Doe, .Pedestal, Town Major and Semper Paratus were prominent to the straight, where Town Major came away and won very easily by three, lengths from The Warden, who beat Brilliant Light by a head. The Sun finished on well in fourth place, with Semper Paratus, Mount Shannon and Air Laddie following. WEIGHTS'FOR SECOND DAY. Uy Tdeffrnph.--Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.
