MODERN MODES IN MAYFAIR

A “GREEN? SEASON. . ... Almost before •we have become ac- - cufitomed to the marking of the natural waistline, the dressmakers, are introducing the pinched-in waist of Victorian days. It is seen in the short coats designed for wear during the next few months, and accompanying it is the fullness fx;om waist to hips which is equally reminiscent of our . grandmothers’ time. 1 ■' In London the most popular colour of the moment is undoubtedly green, though there is a welcome return of navy blue for formal wear. Coats and ■ skirts made of what is known as silk serge are being shown a great deal, and th ■ navy suit is quite as fashionable as was the black or clerical-grey one of a year ago. The soft, loosely-woven tv.eeds in light colours will have to share their popularity with blue as the weeks go on. Except for strictly formal occasions, however, green is the most favoured colour. The designers tried very hard to make us wear yellow as well, but this is not “kind” to any but young women possessed of unblemished complexions. So there has been a compromise and banana yellow with a green tinge in it is now being offered.Green is not an easy colour, either, but its most beautiful tones are in evidence in the new frocks-and hats, the hard shades having been eliminated altogether. Bottle green is suggested for both day and evening wear, and there is a delicious shade of water green which looks specially attractive in the new gros grain, in chiffon, and in taffetas.

The rage for printed materials continues. ■ You may choose • either flowered designs or the small conventional patterns. and the range of fabrics includes voiles, crepes, silks, satins, and chiffon velvets. Floral material is invariably used for coat linings. . Most of the new dresses are trimmed with kilted frills or flounces. It is a most useful form of ornamentation, which looks equally dainty on a frock of filmy fabric and on one of a heavier material. A navy crepe dress shown this week had tiers of kilted flounces on the skirt, the lowest one being carried round from the hem to the hip at the left side.
