AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

NEW PLYMOUTH WINTER SHOW. A meeting of the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society was held in New Plymouth yesterday. Present: Messrs. H. 0. Sampson (chairman), J. H. Allen, G. W. Browne, J. M. Smith, J. T. Goodrich, W. B. Grant, A. T. Moore, F. W. Sutton, F. Dodunski, W; is.. Morris, P. McCabe, E. S. Allen, A. R. Gudopp, F. W. Cornwall,"A. Turnbull. T. Wilton and E. W. B. Griffiths. In apologising for the absence of Mr. Trimble, the chairman remarked that Mr. Trimble was in Wellington looking to the interests of the Taranaki Scholarship fund which was most unfairly coveted by Victoria College. A photograph of the executive committee of the society taken the first time the winter show was held in its own premises in New Plymouth 18 years ago, was presented to the society by Mr. G. W. Browne. Mr. Browne trusted the photograph would help the society to keep in memory the earnest workers of the past. It was a great pleasure to . them to have Mr. Browne with the society still, said the chairman. He hoped that the society would have an enlargement made of the photograph to hang in its rooms. He suggested that the society might well try to obtain photographs of presidents during the past 40 or 50 years. Mr. Browne also showed to members the key with which he had opened the show in its new building. Suggestions were forwarded for the improvement of .the garden vegetable section at the show by the judge, Mr. G. A. Aggett. The recommendations will be submitted to the committee to revise the schedule for the next winter show. It was decided to call a conference of dairy factory managers, produce graders and stewards who had charge of the butter and cheese sections, at an early date to consider matters in connection with the dairy factory produce section. The New Zealand Friesian Association wrote that its Taranaki branch would subsidise Friesian classes for the coming' show to the amount of £4 4s. s In addition the association would grant £2 for a heifer calf class open to members of boys’ and girls’ calf rearing clubs. The subsidies would be subject to the society’s accepting' the association’s appointment of judges for the Friesian classes. The Friesian association’s offer was accepted. Suggestions regarding the next winter show were made by Mr. Goodrich. In the vegetable section he thought there should be a sliding scale of charges. It was not fair that one or two little radishes which had little production value should receive the same prize as a whole string of onions. Mr. Goodrich was also in favour of having two classes for hay. It was hardly fair to put lucerne hay in competition with meadow hay. Both these suggestions were referred to the schedule committee. / The question of membership was brought up by Mr. Goodrich. By having a separate list of members for the winter show at a reduced rate more tow n people might join. The whole question of tickets was referred to the finance committee. I ■ ■ ■■•> Estimates are.to.be obtained for the.

ealcimining . and panelling of the. walls of the dance hall at the Agricultural Hall. / - . The entertainment of the ladies who helped with the show was considered. A suggestion was made that the ladies might be taken to the Stratford show for an afternoon. The chairman and Messrs. Gudopp, Moore, Smith, Allen and the secretary were appointed a sub-com-mittee to consider the matter. _ A letter of appreciation is to be forwarded to Mr. Walter Ambury for his assistance at the 21st annual winter show and thanks for his donation of £3 3s towards the cost of erecting a further building.
