TARANAKI HUNT CLUB

PACK MEETS AT MR. P. COLE’S SPLENDID OUTING AT WAIPAPA. ONE LONG RUN ENDS WITH A KILL •• (By “Moturoa.”) With perfect hunting weather, a fim stretch of country and a strong hare which set a merry pace for a full three miles, 'it is little wonder the members of the Taranaki Hunt Club considered the meet at Mr. Cole’s property, Wai - papa, on Saturday, one of the best hunts of the season. There was a full attendance of members and, while pretty fencing was generally the feature of the outing, there were several spills which added to the thrills of the chase. Breaking from cover near the beach a strong hare was viewed running fast across the point-to-point steeplechase course to Mr. Cole’s and to Mr. Robinson’s, where it wheeled smartly and raced for the cliffs again. The pack was in full throat not twenty yards behind the hare. Across a damp piece of ground the pack was momentarily, checked and it looked as if the quarry was going to make good its escape, but it ran headlong into wire-netting. As in a daze, the hare ran back nearly into the pack before swerving in an endeavour to reach the swamp, but the leaders killed on the edge of the damp ground. The pack worked the stretch down to the beach again but no further hares were raised. Following afternoon tea, Master Hal-'" combo expressed the thanks of the club for the hospitality extended by Mr. and Mrs. Cole. It was indeed fortunate for the club that it had such staunch supporters as Mr. and Mrs. Cole; for many years this family had gone to considerable trouble simply in the interests of the sport. The master regretted having to speak about a number of horses being jumped after the run. Such a practice made the property-owners think the horses were but only to be schooled. The farmers extended them a great privilege and it should not be abused. He was pleased to see among the spectators Mr. B. H. Chaney, the former master of the club. They had regretted Mr. Chaney’s departure for Auckland, which had necessitated his resigning from a position. Among the mounted followers were Master A. H. Halcombe (Passport), Huntsman J. Sexton (Steeplejack), Whip K. Bedford (Miss De Reske), Messrs. W. Joll (Silver Cord), J. Edwin (Patrolet), I. Cole (Puwhato), C. Honeyfield (Civility), R. L, Powell (Lorna Doone), L.
