Ponjbla and Maunga were given strong pace work and moved very freely. Both will contest the Hawke’s Bay Steeples. ft ft ft * Rich Harvest was of little use to Tahoma over a mile run in Imin 45sec. * ft ft * Lordlike and Golden Shadow went .nicely over three-quarters of a mile in Imin 18-Jsec. Both could have done better. « ft ft ft King Mann ran five furlongs in 64J sec. # « « # Brown Sugar covered five furlongs comfortably in 66scc. * «■ * * Whakane and Zippor gave a fine display over a round of the hurdles. «■ # Tinipouri and Hillcullus worked a mile in 1.56. # '-■vßepay and Teawha sprinted four furlongs in-54see. Bullford, looking very fit, covered five furlongs in G64see. ' ■» Handy jumped well over the big fences. * * * Ganpat and Bernera did six furlongs in Imin 18|see. * «■ « * Queen’s Choice cut out five furlongs in a tick under 63<sec, this being the best of the morning . “DOWN THE LINE NEWS.” (By “Paritutu.”) ’ This week’s racing fixtures include the South Canterbury J.C., winter meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Saturday, and the Hawke’s Bay J.C. winter gathering, which will attract a lot of attention on Friday and Saturday. Acceptances for the latter meeting will not appear until Wednesday morning. # z ft ft e The following week, on Wednesday, Taranaki sportsmen will have a splendid winter attraction in the EgmontWanganui Hunt meeting at Hawera, and judging by the entries (which have come from all parts of the coast) a first class day’s sport is promised. * « ft * Horse-owners and trainers will now be interested in the Wellington R.C. winter meeting, which is set down for July 8, 10 and 12. This meeting ranks next in importance to the Grand National and Great Northern jumping meetings, and very fine stakes are offered, the Wellington Steeples being worth .1000 sovs.; the Winter Hurdles another 1000 sovs., and the July Steeples 600 sovs. For flat racers the Parliamentary. of 500 sovs., the winter Oafs Handicap, of 500 sovs., and the Whyte Handicap, of 500 sovs., all promise to draw good fields. The Wellington meeting, coming just five weeks before the New Zealand Grand National meeting, is always looked to as a guide to likely Grand National winners, and is therefore of more than usual interest.

If the recent- Dunedin J.C. winter meeting is any criterion there are very few outstanding jumpers in the South Island this season. The very ancient Balboa gelding Snowfall appears to be about their best steeplechaser, but when a very ordinary horse like Radiate can give the veteran a good race at practically even weights it does not make the former appear to be much good. Carinthia, by winning the Otago Hurdle Race in track record time, is a five-year-old gelding of promise, but the tracks were exceptionally fast for the time, of the year, and' little notice can be taken.of the all-round fast gallops, both on the flat and over obstacles, recorded at Wingatui this month. The chances are that North Island horses will sweep the* pools at. Trentham and at Riccarton, tbiugh surprises are always possible when horses are “in the air.” ... ,■ • # . . * *;' ~ * The Bulls trainer, Alf<-Neatly,, brought Nippy back with him,,froin Auckland, t>■ (, .! >

and an effort will probably bo made to make the Australian-bred gelding into a jumper. By Bardolph—Carmetta, Nippy was foaled in 1922 and has shown fair form on the flat, shaping well with the sting out of the going. Neale has been very successful with his jumping aspirants, and there is every reason te think’ that'Nippy will' reward him before long.' ' ‘ ' ’ > < i ,y ' •> .' i' .
