SALE OF POPPIES

NEXT YEAR’S SUPPLY. LOCAL MANUFACTURE PROPOSED. All the poppies sold on “Poppy Day” have, up to the present, been imported from England, but the Christchurch branch of tho Returned Soldiers’ Association is now contemplating a scheme for the manufacture of the emblems in New Zealand, in preparation for next year’e appeal. Nothing definite has yet been decided on, nor will there be any decision until after the association’s conference in Wellington on'June 24. The intention of the association is to train two partially disabled soldiers in the work, which would occupy them for some months. The imported poppies are made at the Disabled Soldiers’ Poppy Factory, Richmond, Surrey, and over 200 meh are employed all the year round, supplying the whole of the British Empire. While th© Christchurch organisation does not desire to cause any unemployment at the English factory, it feels that if the poppies could be, manufactured in Christchurch there Is no reason why disabled soldiers here should not reap the benefit. So far the poppies have been made of linen, but it is now proposed that they should be manufactured from paper, as they are not meant to last and are worn for only one day in the year.
