LAST DAY OF THE SHOW

PERFECT WEATHER FOR THIRD DAY ' KENNEL SECTION EVOKES INTEREST GOVERNOR SEES EXHIBITION TO-DAY In marked contrast to the storm conditions of the previous evening, yesterday proved beautifully fine. Consequently there was a very large attendance at the Coronation Hall for the third day of the twenty-first winter show of the Taranaki Agricultural • Society. Among the crowd were large numbers from Inglewood and Waitara, both of which were enjoying their weekly halfholiday. Last night there was another large crowd. On all sides were to be heard expressions of surprise at the. magnitude of the show; and the completeness of the arrangements. The striking scheme of decorations for which Messrs. T. Petty and J. Christoffel were responsible, has also been the subject of very favourable comment. The twenty-first birthday cake, liberally besprinkled with coin as well as fruit, has proved a huge success. Placed in a prominent position near the main entrance it has already produced over £l5O, showing, the committee a very handsome margin of profit on the £BO-that its manufacture cost. It has proved a happy idea to augment the funds.

The public found much of interest in the motor hall, the produce hall, the poultry section, among the rabbits (a novelty that has “taken on” well), among the home industries and fancy work, or out among the side-shows, and all had an enjoyable time, even though at times movement was difficult sb congested were some of the passageways. 1 Interest yesterday largely centred in the New Plymouth Kennel Club’s show, which was housed in the basement of the main hall and will continue tp-day. The entries numerically are well up to those of S/ious years, being representative of the rict * extending from Avondale to Palmerston North. ■ In quality there is a very marked improvement. The keen interest taken in the

canine cult was shown by the large number of interested spectators that witnessed the judging and afterwards by the crowds that thronged the kennel section. Unquestionably a visit to this section is an education, even to the casual observer, and lovers of dogs should not miss it. The kennel show is certainly becoming a decided adjunct to the show. The show will close to-day when, as the schools have '■ a holiday for the occasion and children are being admitted at a low fee, there should be a large attendance. In the afternoon the Governor-General and party, who are making their first visit to New Plymouth, will make a tour of inspection of the show. The committee of ladies in charge of the catering had another busy day but they came through the ordeal smilingly.

KENNEL CLUB AWARDS

STRONG BENCHING OF SPANIELS. COCKER SPANIEL vTHE CHAMPION. The honour of receiving the award for the hast dog or bitch in the show was secured by G. Taylor (Palmerston North) with the Cocker 'Spaniel dog -/ Renaultrae Vagabond, this dog also securing several other specials. The judge. ■ Mr. D. D. Wilson, Hamilton, who has had wide, experience of judging throughout the Dominion, ii eluding Royal shows, expressed himself an very pleased with the"' cocker spaniels exhibited, many of which could hold their own with the best in the country. The winner was a particularly outstanding specimen and the manner in which he was benched reflected great credit on his Owner. Cocker spaniels in New Zealand, added the judge,, were' the outstanding breed- in regard to quality, and there : . wqre many in New Zealand that would ; compare very favourably with the best in the United Kingdom. He regretted, , however, that New Zealand’s other breeds were hardly up to that standard, though he was pleased to note a marked improvement, particularly in wire and smooth fox terriers. With recent importations there should later be a further improvement shown. There are some fine bull-dogs, setters, collies and airedales benched and there is an excellent showing of toys, despite the fact that' the Auckland Kennel Club’s toy show clashes with the New Plymouth show. ’ The Alsatians, which were judged by ' Mrs. Stonnell, Lepperton, made a splendid showing and attracted general admiration, even though some of the timid spectators were inclined to keep at a distance. The : best Alsatian was. shown by C, 11. Kissling, Palmerston North. The schedule is liberally endowed with trophies and special prizes and these have been well distributed from Hamilton to Palmerston North, Taranaki fanciers, particularly Mr. F. W, Swindells (fox terriers), Mrs. R. J. Copestake (cocker spaniel), P. F. Hawkins (bulldogs), J. S. Kerry (Airedales) and Mrs. G. Lawson (smooth fox terriers), the latter also winning the ladies’ bracelet. The arrangementfl for the show reflect' great credit on those responsible, including the show managers, Messrs. Peters and Alloway; hief award, Mr. A. G. Walshe; call steward, Mr. J. S. King; benching stewards,. Mrs. Lealand (toy doge); Messrs. Stonnell -nd Lawson. Mr. A, T.
