AFFRAY ON TRAMP STEAMER
NEGRO FIREMAN ASSAULTED. By Telegraph.-—Press Association. Auckland, June 10. Following the affray on the tramp steamer Quercus last Thursday, when a negro fireman, Edward Seldon, was found on deck in an unconscious condition, three seamen bn the vessel, Reginald James Kenip, aged 22, John Owen Jenkins, aged 23, and Reginald Montgomery, aged 33, were charged, in the Police Court with assault, causing actual bodily harm. The charge was reduced to common assault to enable the men to be dealt with summarily, as the steamer is to sail shortly from the Dominion and the accused are prohibited immigrants. "I think the ends of justice will be met if I convict accused and order them to pay expenses," said the magistrate. He ordered, accused to pay whatever hospital expenses were incurred by Seldon, the doctor’s fee of 10s 6d, the ambulance fee of £1 Is, and witness’ expenses of 10s.
