CHICAGO MURDER HURT

SHOOTING OF JOURNALIST “MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH” FORCES OF CITY AROUSED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, June 10. Chicago authorities have announced that they know the murderer of Lengle, the reporter. Rarely before in the history of Chicago crime has the city been so aroused as over the murder of the journalist. Rewards of 40,000 dollars have been offered for the apprehension and conviction of his slayer, while the entire city has been organised on a great murder hunt. The police state that attorneys, private detectives and the organised power of the Press have joined to track down the killer of a man who, during 18 years’ service, came to "learn too much” about Chicago criminals. A message from Chicago stated that Albert Lengle, reporter for the Chicago Tribune, who had been investigating crime, was shot and killed by an unidentified assailant while entraining at a railway station in the heart of the city for a suburb on an assignment. The assailant escaped. CHALLENGE TO COMMUNITY. "THERE WILL BE CASUALTIES.” Rec. 7.30 p.m. New York, June 10. A military funeral has been planned for Mr. Lengle. The Chicago Tribune in a leader tonight stated: “The Tribune accepts the challenge. It is war. There, will be casualties but that is to be expected, it being war. There is no mistaking the meaning of the murder. The challenge of crime to the community must be accepted.”
