EVERYBODY’S TALKIES. ‘THE SQUALL.” One of the finest all-star casts ever assembled for a feature motion picture is to be seen in “The Squall.” now showing at Everybody’s Talkies, New d?lymouth. The principal roles in . this screen version of Jean Bary’s sensational ( and daring stage play are -played by Alice Joyce as the mother, Richard Tucker as the father, Myrna Loy as Nubi, the seductive gipsy maid, Loretta Young, Carrol Nye, Nicholas Soussanin as the fierce gipsy leader, Knute Erickson, Harry Cording, Zasu Pitts as the whimsical servant girl, Marcia Harris as the destructive gossip, George Hackathorne as the silly, whimpering nephew, and numerous others in lesser roles. The story relates the dire effects of permitting a vamping gipsy girl to come into a house of peace-loving folks. The supports include Fox Movietone News, Audio Review and Pathe Sound frews. THE REGENT. SPECIAL MATINEE TO-DAY, 2 P.M. “The Cock-Eyed World,” starring Victor McLaglen and Edmund Lowe, has every ingredient that makes for real pastime; humour, sparkling dialogue, hectic love scenes, tense drama, and a happy combination of all those things that appeal from the screen, especially to the" feminine sex. The supporting cast is excellent, with El Brendel, former star of musical comedy and vaudeville, reaping plenty of honours with his incomparable portrayal of a Swede Marine, “Olson,” Joe Brown, Bobby Burns and Ivan Linlow also have important roles. “The Cock-Eyed World” will again be screened at a special matinee: to-day at 2 p.m., to-night at 8 p.in. and finally to-morrow night. A Fox Movietone News opens the programme. CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT. WEBER’S OPERA “OBERON.” For the first time in its history, the New Plymouth Choral Society has ventured into the realm of real opera for its first concert of the current season, and on Tuesday will present to the public of the district Carl M. von Weber’s brilliant opera “Oberon” at the newlyrenovated Empire Theatre. This is a very attractive work, and the choir and orchestra have been engaged in its preparation for the past few months with interest and enthusiasm. The overture is a notable one and a great favourite. The chorus and solo work is of a very : attractive nature, and the enterprise of the society in introducing this class of work to the public is worthy of the widest support. As an additional attraction the society has made engagements with a first-rate set of soloists for the principal parts, including Madame Vita Cornwall as tlie leading soprano, Mrs. Ashley B. Macdonald as mezzo-soprano, Messrs. Arthur H. Ripley (Auckland) and Edwin Dennis (Wellington) as the tenors, and Mr. Harold Ackroyd (Hawera) as baritone. Subscribers are being enrolled for the season, and the rates for the full season of three subscription concerts are very reasonable, averaging slightly over two shillings per ticket for the season. Application may be made to members of the society, or to the secretary, Mr. J. H. Sheat, State Fire Buildings. Subscribers have preferential booking concessions. The plan for the coming concert will open to the public to-morrow.
