NEW PLYMOUTH SHOW

BLEAK WEATHER FOR SECOND DAY

KEEN INTEREST IN POULTRY SECTION

WHOLE EXHIBITION OPEN TO-DAY

Bleak, uninviting weather conditions prevailed for the second day of the Taranaki Metropolitan Agricultural Society’s winter show yesterday. The attendance was smaller than in previous years, yet many braved the winter gale, and it was reported last night that 2013 had paid for admission. There was also a large number with free passes not included in the total.

Judging in the poultry exhibitions was continued throughout the day. It was noticeable that there was a decrease in the numbers of birds shown in the fancy sections. This was attributed to 'f the fact that the increase in food values had turned fanciers’ attention rather to utility types, where a greater return could be expected. A slight decrease in the utility section was revealed. Quality, on the contrary, has shown no tendency to fall away; indeed, it seems to be improving. Pigeons proved a strong class, the : effect of the two clubs in’New Plymouth being to maintain interest. The attempt, to encourage competition in the canary classes has suc- . ceeded to a great extent, the result being that the, entries were nearly two-thirds greater than last year.

The new industrial rabbit display was judged early and throughout the day attracted considerable attention.. The Boys and Girls’ Clubs section and schools rural competition were completed.

The whole show will be in full swing to-day..when the Kennel Club’s exhibits will be judged.

REMARKS OF POULTRY JUDGES.

QUALITY GOOD IN FANCY SECTION.

The fancy section, judged by Mr. W. Hall, Lepperton, was very wide in its Scope. The judge stated that the general quality throughout the classes was good, but the number of exhibitors showed a marked tendency to decrease. The. Old English Game class, with four entries, had a number of good birds, a particularly fine one being the black fed cock belonging to Mrs. A. J. Mills.

The Orpingtons were Very good and generally up to the standard •of quality. The entries were also fairly numerous and well shown.

Not nearly such a full class as in previous shows, the Rocks were mostly of good appearance. A barred hen in particular, shown 'by Mr. A. J. Davey, < iStratford, was outstanding, and was eventually declared champion bird at • the show. The Wyandottes were a strong class

and in quality fit to compete in any show in New Zealand. The golden cock (Mr. W. Parker, Bell Block) was an exceptionally good bird. The birds in the Rhode Island Red class were good, but were represented by only one bird in each class. Another small class, consisting only of four, was the Light Sussex. The English Leghorns were not a very strong class, the white hen belonging to Mr. J. Mqjntosh being the win-

ner of the special. The American variety was a class that had displayed a decided falling off in numbers. This tendency was a very general one in this section. The cock owned by Mr. D. Starr, Frankton Junction, was the best bird. The North Auckland Minorca Championship attracted a fair number of .enliries, but the. quality was only medium. However, individually there were some good Minorcas, although many were not very well shown. The championship went to Mr! A. H. Bull’s (Otane,

Hawke’s Bay) cockerel. - The Campines and Hamburgs were small classes and the special was won ■by Mr. E. Atkinson’s (Palmerston N.),' cockerel. He was the most outstanding bird. There were but two entries in the Hamburgs and they were only fair. Rather an unusual variety were the Silkies, and the judge said he was rather surprised to see them. The birds were hardly up to show standard. BANTAM CLASSES. The judge stated that the Old English Game were' on the whole very poor and there were only a few entries. The Modern Game made some very fair classes and several good 'birds were observed. Tlie Rosecombs were one of the strongest classes he had judged, the majority of the birds being of high standard. The winner was hard to choose, but the special was eventually awarded to Mr. E. Vernor’s (Mffnaia) cockerel. The Pckins were better than usual, the Buffs especially having a very good colour, owing no doubt to the introduction of new blood into the district. The black variety was represented by only one exhibit, but this was exceptionally good and was the best bird in the bantam show. It was a hen owned by Mr. H. McNeill, New Plymouth. The duck classes were small, being represented by only a few Pekins and Khaki Campbells, and one Cayauga, which latter was rather a good bird. The judge was disappointed in not seeing any Indian Runners, Generally this show had been a stronghold of the breed. There was a really good display of continued the judge, and one golden pheasant, exhibited by Mr. L. B Tuffery, New Plymouth, was splendid. In fact, the entire class was owned by the same exhibitor and constituted as large a section as he had seen at any show. These birds were a great credit Ito the exhibitor as they were more trouble to show than any other bird. LARGE UTILITY CLASSES. The Utility section, judged by Mr. A. P. Lister, New Plymouth, was a very large one and in many cases it was difficult to separate the exhibits. On the whole, he remarked, the female birds were better than the males.’

In the White Leghorn class the top cock .was very good considering his age, while the hen was an exceptional bird *nd the runner-up for the best utility bird at the show. The white cockerels were rather disappointing, although Ithere was a large entry. There were

one or two-very good pullets. Though running to a certain amount to hard colouring,- the Brown Leghorns were a very fair lot. Few in number, the Rocks had some meritorious representatives. The females in the Wyandotte classes were very good and there were one or two very fine silver pullets. Again the male birds were not up ito standard. The Rhode. Island Red was another small class, ydt some’ of the birds were above the average.

The judge described ■ the Light- Sussex as only a fair lot, with the very obvious exception of the winning pullet, which netted two specials, being the 'best utility exhibit. In addition, this bird was runner-up for the award for the best bird in the show. The Black' Minorcas were described as rather inclined to coarseness. The North Island championship was competed for and the winning hen was a very stylish bird. A large entry of Minorca pullets was on the whole rather mediocre. VERY HIGH-CLASS PIGEONS. . Although not a very large, entry the standard of the exhibits was very fair, remarker the judge in the pigeon section, Mr. A. H. Guthrie, Wellington. He especially praised the quality of the African Owls which, he said, was the finest team he had handled either in ■ Australia or New Zealand. There was nothing of their high quality shown at the Sydney Royal Show twelve months ago. The champion pigeon owned by Mr. J. Hurle, New Plymouth, was a “topper,” and the best African he had seen. The other fancy classes, however, were poor in comparison. The racing homers were as a whole a good section. Individually there were some first-class birds. Breeders, he said, should pay special attention to the- condition of their pigeons when preparing them for the’ show. He had come across many birds which were not through their moult and many were also in very soft condition. There were some very fine birds in the distance class, he concluded. - ■ CANARY ENTRIES INCREASING. There was an entry of 25 birds in the canary section. The judge, Mr. W. J. Upton, stated that the‘canaries were fairly good quality. The ■ manner ot showing, however, was in some cases rather - detrimental to the exhibitors’ chances. The standard of the birds, with which he was very pleased, was very good throughout. There were one or two outstanding Norwich and one outstanding Yorkshire which, although entered by a novice, was the winning bird in the section. Committee.—Messrs. H. J. Hall (chairman), F. J.
