MOUNT EGMONT FACILITIES

PRiHxRICS.S OF STRATFORD SIDE,

(By ‘The Ski-man.") The three mountain clubs in Tarana'ki —New Plymouth, Hawcra and Stratford—now have a supply of skis on hand. Members are eagerly watching the Stratford Plateau, where the ski-ing grounds are situated, for signs of falling snow, By this time last year there was snow to a depth of several feet on the ski-track and as many as 60 mountaineers in one day were to be seen enjoying themselves. Present indications are that the snow will soon be the required depth. The girls of •$. Mary’s (Stratford) had an enjoyable day on the Stratford Plateau on June 3, 40 or more girls making the trip. Snowballs and snow-slides were plentiful, even if a little wet in places, and many under the capable guidance of Miss Wilson and her assistant, Miss Beale, journeyed as far as the Maunganui Gorge, a trip that is absolutely safe under such supervision. Good work was carried out by members of tire Stratford Mountain Club, assisted by Mr, Bert Rowe and party with saws and axes, on June 3, when much of the ground opposite the Stratford mountain house was cleared. All wood which would lie- useful for firewood was stacked, whilst the rubbish was placed in heaps where it may become useful later. The services of an expert will be availed of at an early date to lay out this area, where alpine ferns and shrubs will be planted and little interesting paths made. It is hoped that much money will be made a t the mountain club’s series of dances so that material may be acquired and the sportsgrouud on the Stratford Plateau developed.

Now that the road to the Stratford mountain house is metalled it would appear that the next matter to exercise the minds of the east committee is increased accommodation for both day and night visitors. ’ The top house is far too small for the number of visitors patronising the resort on Sundays and holidays to have their meals inside in comfort. If the house were enlarged and a number of small tables installed, not only would the day visitor be provided for, but there would then be room either to hold dance parties in the evenings or to provide shakedowns for parties wishing to stay over holidays and week-ends.

The committee granted the request subject to the approval of the police. Mr. IL Howell made an application for a reduction in the accommodation license fee of the Okato Hotel from £2O to £ls.—Declined.

The chairman said that the committee appreciated the g’ood conduct of licensed premises throughout the past year. There had been no police objections and in regard to the 17 licenses issued there had been only one adverse comment. This related to a sale after hours, a practice which the committee most strongly disapproved. The committee wished to record its satisfaction that licensees were endeavouring to conduct their premises as they should.
