INADEQUATE STAFFING

STRATFORD STOCK OFFICE, APPEAL MADE TO DEPARTMENT. The manager of a Stratford stock firm (Mr. N. B. Fletcher,' drew the attention of the executive of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last night, to what he described as the unsatisfactory staffing of the Stratford office of the Agricultural Department, He was not casting any reflection on the local officers, wrote Mr. Fletcher, as the position was apparently brought about by the want of an office cleric or someone to attend to business matters in the almost continual absence of the stock inspector who had a large district to supervise. In consequence, brand registrations and other matters were often held up, which, in turn delayed the registration of legal documents causing monetary loss in late registration fees, etc. Mr. Feltcher asked the chamber to use its influence in an effort to remedy the position.

The chairman said he had communicated with the department on the matter and had been advised that the Direc-tor-General was giving the question, consideration.

The chamber will approach the borough council with a view to securing combined action between the two bodies to urge the early construction of the new railway station at Stratford. It was decided to urge the Railway Department to have the railway leaseholds in Stratford brought under the provisions of the Land Transfer Act. GENERAL ITEMS. Sergeant Power- stated that accused had been arrested at 2,30 a.m. yesterday after having been found asleep in the Club Hotel I stables, which had recently been closed. Though he had had a fair sum of money on his person accused had said that he had been out late visiting friends and had been unable to procure a bed. The offence was not a serious one but people could not be permitted to sleep on enclosed premises on account of the danger of fire. The capacity of the water channels in Stratford was sorely taxed by a heavy downpour about 9 a.m. yesterday. Many street corners were flooded where drains . intersected and overflowed through being blocked by rubbish.
