GENERAL ITEMS. Careering wildly from one side of the road to the other a large motor-lorry finished up by mounting a bank, crashing into a telegraph pole and overturning about one mile south of Manaia, on the Main South Road on Sunday. An eyewitness reported that about 12.30 p.m. the lorry was approaching a slight bend ■on tho road when it appeared as if something had happened to the driving machinery. After it had struck the pole and overturned various parts of the undercarriage, differential springs, and back wheels parted from the machine. Although the lorry was extensively damaged the driver, Mr. N. Murray escaped with only slight abrasions. The collision w’th the telegraph polo resulted in several wires breaking. The installation of higher powered lamps on the Triangle War Memorial gave Patea’s business centre a much gayer look on Saturday night. Tho whole structure now does credit.to the borough and is much more appropriate as a South African War memorial.

The recent succession of "frosts in no way deterred a couple of Maori boys’ aquatic efforts in the Patea River. Clad only in Nature’s garb they spent hours in the ice cold water ‘sailing’ on a float-, ing bough, far from any ‘gallery,’ but apparently representing two of the happiest youngsters in the Dominion. A mission -is being conducted this week at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Hawera, by officers of the church. The opening service was held last night, Dr. W. M. Thomson and Mr. P. Coleman being the speakers. Mr. F. C. Bone was the “chairman. Sessions will be held throughout the week except on Saturday. When a motorist proceeding from Stratford to Hawera yesterday morning saw a baby ear in front of him ekid ancl turn completely over three times he did not expect to see the driver emerge practically unscathed. Such was, however, the case, and Mr. Blick, Hawera, the driver of the capsized vehicle, must be accounted exceedingly fortunate in escaping with only a few scratches. The accident occurred on the Boylan Road. Fire destroyed an old uncoupled residence on Mr. N. Gane’s farm, Inaha Road, about a mile below the ma)jn South Road, apparently in the early hours of Sunday morning. Nothing was known of the conflagration' until - the ruins were discovered by a neighbouring farmer. The house was surrounded by high pine trees and a boxthorn hedge, but the absence of wind prevented the trees from catching fire.
