GREAT VALUE OF LUCERNE.
LORD BLEDISDOE’S EXPERIENCE. Interesting comments on the value of grasses in dairying were made by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, at the smoke concert, tendered him by. the Dairy Division of the AVaikato "Winter Show Association. Lord Bledisloe said they had been told" that the narrow stemmed kale was an exhausting crop, but it should be remembered that no crop that was reasonably remunerative should be regarded as unduly exhausting. In Argentina and th© middle west of Canada and th© United States, where there was as much as six months of drought, it was possible to have from four t© six crops from the surface out of the use of lucerne. _ . “There may be advantages rn the Warkato,” said His Excellency, “which render lucerne a relatively unattractive crop and I sc no reason in this district why’you should change your grasses. In ease any farmers her© have tried lucerne and failed, I may state that I have mad© unsuccessful experiments m the last five years, but have at last succeeded in discovering the leal value of this grass.”
