TROUT WITH A TAG
YEAR’S GROWTH CHECKED. A trout bearing a silver tag, on which was the inscription “IA —545,” was caught near the one-mile peg at Lake Taupo,- recently, by Mr. J. A. Burtenshaw, of Napier. The tag, a small piece of silver measuring about half an inch by a quarter of an inch, was attached to the second fin of the fish by a split ring. It was fixed to the fish by a Government official—to whose department Mr. Burtenshaw sent it—vyith tho object of observing the growth and tho habits of the specimen. In a letter to Mr. Burtenshaw, Mr. A. Lean, conservator of fish and game, of the Department of Internal Affairsrafter acknowledging receipt of the tag, says: “I thank you for your interest in those operations, and only wish that all anglers were as obliging. This fish was tagget on June 25, 1929, in the hatchery stream which flows past the department’s hatchery above the Tongariro River bridge. Its length at that date was 25 inches, and its weight 61b., so that it has grown IJin. and gained in weight. Another important factor gained is the long distance that it has travelled since it was tagged.”
