TRADE WITH CANADA
AUSTRALIAN ACTIVITIES. ■ -COMMISSIONER APPOINTED. • . On his way to take up his duties Australia’s first trade commiraioner in Canada, Mr. L. R. Macgregor is a through passenger to Vancouver by the Niagara. , Mr. JVlacgregor has had a highly successful record of Go zernment service in Australia, and is keen to assume his new duties. “Most countries realise now that m order to keep pace with the time they must get out and look for trade,” Mr. MacgrOgor said to an Auckland ihcerviewer. “It is not sufficient to have goods of quality to sell; rhe markets must be kept well supplied with information concerning the goods and new markets must be developed. Of course, trade relations already exist between Australia and Canada, and the Commonwealth has been served by commercial representatives in that Dominion. However, Australia’s imports from Canada have been heavier than the exports, and my principal duty will he to do what I can to* remedy that adverse trade balance.” • . There were a number of Aus’Z’alian commodities in which a greater export trade could b 6 built up, Mr. Majgregnr said. Already Canada imported considerable quantities of Australian dried and canned fruit, notwithstanding' its proximity to California, but even this market was capable of extension. Efforts would also be made to increase . the Canadian imports of Australian wines, and, like New Zealand, Australia was anxious to develop the market for its butter.. ’ - ■"Mr. Macgregor, who is accompanied by his wife and family, was born in Scotland, and there received his early training in banking and law. He also trained °experience in land management and at the age of 23 was appointed assistant manager of a large estate in India. In 1922 he was appointed Director of Agricultural Or-o-anisation n Queensland and in 1926 Director of Marketing. He held this position when he was appointed to his new post.
