FOLLOWING THE HOUNDS
SOME NEW COUNTRY BROKEN
HUNTING IN NORTH TARANAKI.
MANY HARES BUT NO KILLS.
(By
“Moturoa.”)
When the members of the, Taranaki Hunt Club accepted the invitation of Messrs. Rackley and McKenzie to hunt on their properties on Saturday, practically new country was broken, as this area had not been hunted for several years. Showery weather tended to dampen the spirits of the followers, but the large attendance of mounted followers was recompensed for any inconvenience by a good number of smart runs. No kill was made. It was splendid country to hunt over and the hosts of the afternoon had gone to considerable trouble in sparring the fences oyer a wide area. Scarcely had the pack been set free near Mr. Rackley’s homestead than a warm trail set the leaders throating their find. The hare.gave a good chase before the hounds had to be called back from forbidden country. Hare after hare had the pack in full cry, but when a kill seemed imminent on fully half a dozen occasions other hares were raised and the conflicting trails had the hounds in a quandary. The hounds and hunters were on the move throughout the afternoon though no kill was made. The followers were hospitably entertained at the homestead by Mrs. Rackley and family.
