He is out to smash the evil reputation of the venture, which has cost many lives. He leaves Baldonncl in a day or two for Curragh, County Kildare, from where he will start.

“We haven’t the slightest doubt we ehall reach America,” he said. “We have tho best crew in the world, and the Southern Cross is in first-class condition. We shall follow the northern great circle route as far as Cape Race. The 1900 miles should occupy 23 hours. From Cape Race we shall strike towards Maine and skirt the coast to New York. This further 1200- miles should take 12 hours.”
