Mr. Allan Neilley, Sydney, a director of New Plymouth (N.Z.) Oil Wells, Ltd., is visiting/New' Plymouth. The death of Dr. George King, aged 36, is reported from New York. Dr. King was one of the first 10 lawn tennis players of the United States in 1925.
Sir Joseph Ward’s condition shows a decided improvement, says a Rotorua message. He passed a good night, and greatly benefited thereby.
Mr. Vernon Hardshorn has accepted the office of Lord Privy Seal in succession to Mr. J. H. Thomas, reports a London cable.
. Mr. H. Cooper, Palmerston North, Mr. A., France, Wellington, Mr. and Mrs. Goldberg, Wellington, are staying at the Criterion, New Plymouth. Mr. W. Middleton, Waitara, has been admitted a barrister of the Supreme Court by Mr. Justice Blair upon the motion of Mr. C. E. Monaghan. Mr. G. W. Johnson, formerly of New Plymouth, and well known in Taranaki swimming circles, has been appointed to a position with a firm of Suva architects. He left Auckland 1 oft Tuesday. It is the King’s custom each Derby night to give a private dinner party at Buckingham Palace to members of the Jockey Club, but this year his Majesty decided in view of . his recent rheumatic attack not to hold the dinner party.
The- Very Rev. G. R. Barnett, Dean of Hamilton, who has been on siek leave, is expected to return to Hamilton to take the services at the Cathedral next Sun* day.
Lord Bledisloe is suffering from a cold and was unable to attend the races yes* terday, states an Auckland Press Association message. Mt. T. S. Hickey, proprietor of the Opunake Times, has disposed of his interests in that paper to Mr. 0. H. Marcroft, late of the Waikato Times, and leaves shortly for Auckland. Mr. H. R. Duncan, for 17 years chairman of the Nelson Harbour Board, was unanimously re-elected yesterday chairman for a further term. Mr. J. Corder was re-elected chairman of the Waimea County Council, and Mr. F. W. 0. Smith was re-elected chairman of : the hospital board, the Press'Association reports.
The death has occurred of Mrs. James Lusk, Rahotu. Mrs. Lusk had resided in the Opunake district over 35 years. Coming from Christchurch, where she married Mr, James Lusk, a member of a well-known Oaonui family, she spent all her married life at Oaonui, being engaged with her husband in storekeepinj and farming. After .the death of her only daughter, and later her husband, she removed to Rahotu, where she had resided for some years.. Mrs. Lusk was always ready to render assistance in any .deserving cause. She took a. keen inteiest in church work and daring the war was to the forefront in any patriotic movement. Mrs. Lusk, who had been m indifferent health for some time, is survived by one son, Mr. Alan Lusk.
