AUROHA BOREALIS—A STAR

GREAT IMPROVEMENT WITH AGE.

(By

“Moturoa.”)

Owning a fair class jumper that can stay reasonably well is a worth-while proposition in New Zealand, as the rich prizes offered for the Northerns do not overshadow other jumping races. It is therefore easily understood why Aurora Borealis, winner of yesterday’s Great Northern Steeplechase, has gathered £3280 in her three seasons of racing, and though her most important victory added £l4OO to her tally, she had won £1570 in earlier jumping events. As a flat racing proposition Aurora Borealis appeared to me on several occasions. to be extremely unlucky, and while she seldom ran a bad race she must have been eostly to Mr. F. R. Waller, her owner. Indeed, her record shows that jumping is her forte, and she has a remarkably consistent record over fences. Nine firsts, four seconds and two thirds, in 24 starts is not bad going, and it will thus be seen that she won one flat race in 40 starts. Aurora Borealis, who was bred by Mr. D. Buick in 1924, has stout blood, as the following leading lines of her pedigree indicate; — Sire: Day Comet by St. Frusquin (son of St. Simon) —Catgut by Lactantius—Catkin by Dog Rose — Lady Loverule’ by Muncaster — Nellie by Hermit. ’ . Dam: Rangiata by California, or Aberbrothock —Elusion by Vanguard—Eclat by Natator—Fame by The Painter—Maid of the Mist by Antidote, Yesterday’s performance stands out as the best yet credited to Aurora Borealis, but another smart effort was credited to her at Awapuni last March when she won the Kairanga Hurdles in Australasian record time, carving out the mile and three-quarters in 3min. 11 I-ssee. By a remarkable coincidence Omeo, who disputed a great finish with her yesterday, had broken the existing record the previous day at the Manawatu meeting, but Aurora Borealis, who ran unplaced in that race, cut a fifth of a second off the time registered by the game little New Plymouth hunter. The following are her performances to date: — At Three Years. £ Unplaced Maiden, Levin — 3rd Maiden, Ashhurst 10 Unplaced Aorangi Trial, Feilding — Unplaced Novice Stakes — 2nd Maiden; Pahiatua 10 Ist Trial Plate 65 Unplaced Tane Handicap ........ — 3rd Victoria Hep., Woodville .... 10 3rd Kumeroa Handicap .. 10 Unplaced Telephone Hep., Dannevirke ■— 2nd Lawn Handicap, Masferton .. 20 2 rd Miki Miki Handicap 10
