BIG PRICES FOR JERSEYS

OAKVALE STUD DISPERSAL KEEN DEMAND FOR TESTED COW'S RECORD PRICE OF SERIES SECURED When the six-year-old Oakvale Nettle fell to the bid of Messrs T. and A. Smith, Otorohanga, at 352 J guineas after spirited bidding at Mr. J. H. Street’s Oakvale stud dispersal sale yesterday, a record was created for this year’s series of sales, the previous best being 275 guineas, which Pinewood’s Viola realised at Mr. G. H. Bell’s sale on Tuesday.

Starting at IAO guineas, 25 guinea bids came in very qifii-kly and the price advanced to 325 guineas, at which there' whs a slight ; pause. A couple 'of 'ten 1 guinea bids saw the bidding restricted to 2J guinea advances and at guineas .Mr. A. E. Watkins, Takinini, who had bid 350 guineas, dropped out, kav-' ing Messrs ' T.. and A. Smith to secure ’’ the cow. They were greeted with a salvo of applause. Oakvale Nettle is by the imported bull Wotton Red Buoy, from Charity’s Sweet. She is at present under test and is expected to exceed 600'1 b fat.

The next highest price was secured for the seven-year-old cow Oakvale Silver Link, by Hawkosbury Starlight— Oakvale Dixie, which was purchased by Truby King, of Stratford, for 210 guineas. She is also under test and is puttin°- up a great record. Three other ■cows realised over 100 guineas. The four cows under test have again shown clearly that the herd has been bred on butter-fat lines, whilst the total -realised for the four—76s' guineas—shows that the demand exists for that class of cow.

That interest has by no means waned in “Jersey-Week” was shown; by; the large and representative bench of buyers from all parts •of the North Island. Perfect weather conditions prevailed and with splendid organisation in evidence the sale was ■ held under ideal conditions. There appeared to be more snap in the bidding than at some of the previous sales. The whole of the 68 lots catalogued changed hands at a total of £3330 4s, the average over all being £49. The 30 cows averaged £66 18s, whilst the. twelve two-year heifers averaged £39 6s, the 17 yearlings £24 8s 6d and tlite nine bulls £26 10s. The top price, 77 guineas, for twoyear heifers, was realised by Oakvale Lucky, by Pinewoods Golden Laddie — Oakvale Fancy, which was secured by Chisholm Bros., Hunterville. The top price for yearlings was realised ?>y Oakvale ■Clematis, a daughter of the top price cow Nettle, by Hawkesbury Lord’s Boy, which goes north with her mother for 50 guineas. There was not a keen demand for bulls. As usual outside buyers purchased freely, just half of the offering being secured, most of which goes to the King Country, but it is. pleasing to note that some of the higher-priced lots remain in Taranaki, Messrs Truby King and H. Salway being the purchasers. Messrs K. Kirk and B. H. Chapman wielded the hammer. Mr. Street had made complete arrangements for the sale, treating all present most, hospitably. Details of the sales are:— " COWS.
