An interesting reference to thar and chamois appears in the report of the Deer Committee of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. Thar and chamois, stated the Deer Committee, had been reported at different, times in the high country, and it was to be hoped that the Government would remove protection from these animals in the society’s district, so that they could be destroyed on sight, otherwise the deer would be blamed for the destruction of the beautiful alpine flora, when, undoubtedly thar and chamois were the culprits.* While driving a sedan car along Powderham Street, New Plymouth, in the direction of Fitzroy last evening Mr, V. W. Arden, a bridge foreman in the Taranaki county, collided with a stationary taxi parked on the left-hand side of the street.’ The sedan suffered a crumpled hamper and right front mudguard, while the windscreen was broken and the radiator pushed back.. The taxi had a front spring broken and the mudguard dented. None of the four occupants of the sedan was injured,. Although the fire which.-,occurred at Waitara on Saturday night .lit up the clear sky brilliantly, there , were many people in the town itself, who until some time later did not know of the occurrence.
