PROPOSED CLOSING OF SCHOOL.

TOKAORA MEETING PROTESTS. At the annual meeting .of householder.-; in the Tokaora /school there were 27 householders. The chairman. Mr. H. F. Wren, gave a short -resume of the work of the year. In resigning from the chair Mr. Wren thanked all those who had assisted him, but he was earnestly requested to retain office, and. finally did so. Seventeen nominations were received and the following were elected the committee: Messrs. H. F. Wren .(chairman), H. E. Johnson (secretary), T. W. Bolland, E. Tippett and N. H. Wren. Considerable discussion took place in regard to the proposed alteration in the school holidays, and on the motion of Messrs. Russell and Thrush it ' was unanimously decided “That this fleeting strongly protests against the school vacation being held in the months of February and March.” The matter of dosing the school created a good deal' of comment from a number of householders, and on the motion of Messra. H. E. Johnson and Jas. Russell the following motion was carried unanimouesly; “That this meeting, representative of Tokaora district, is opposed to the closing of the school and ;that it be a recommendation to the Taranaki Education Board that the present, teacher, Mr. Donnelly, be appointed headmaster. The roll number of pupils at Tokaora is 3G, and the average attendance for last month w as 32.8 ’lf four.more pupils could be enrolled, the attendance would warrant’the appointment of an assistant teacher. PERSONAL ITEMS. A large number of friends from all parts of . South Taranaki attended the funeral of the late Mr. J. S. Crabb at Hawera on Friday. The Rev. R. E. Evans officiated at the graveside and -the pall-bearers were Messrs. T. Tait, John Forbes, W. Robertson, G. H. Ryan, D. G. Smart and T. Foreman. Mr. apd Airs. A. . Hammond/- Mangatoki, and Air. and Mrs. Fowler, Te Roti, left during the week-end for’ a motor tour of the Auckland district. A large and enthusiastic meeting of ladies, presided over by Mrs. Benton, was held in the Auroa hall on Friday after-: noon to arrange for an “old-timers’ ” dance, bliss Duff was elected secretary. It was decided to arrange the stage as a drawing room for cards for non-dancers and to have a grand-march for pioneers, while Poms and short speeches will be given. “Old-timers” from all over Taranaki are expected to be present.

As Florenz Ziegfeld has glorified the American girl, so Radio Pictures glorifies Ziegfeld in its superb spectacle of music, beauty and drama, “Rio Rita,” which opened to a full house on Saturday evening. All the rich qualities of the stage have been retainer in the film production, and to these have been added mobility and magnitude which the stage could not hope to attain. . Against the most lavish sets’ yet seen on the. screen is played and sung the magnificent drama of tho Mexican borderland by Bebe Daniels, John Boles and a supporting cast of hundreds. Mighty vocal choruses, inspiring dance routines, and beauty assemblies show for the first time the endless possibilities of the speaking screen. The whole of the second part of tho production is filmed in technicolour aboard a sumptouslydurnished galleon anchored in the Rio Grande. Harry Tierney’s music that set the world humming lives anew, and such melodious numbers as “Rio Pita,” “Following the Sun Around,” “The Kinkajou,” “Sweetheart We Need Each Other” and "You’re Always in My Arms” roused a crowded house to rare enthusiasm. John Boles, who makes a dashing Chief of the Texas Rangers, sings as a past-master of the operatic art, yet Bebe Daniels, who makes her debut as a song-bird in "Rio Rita,” is a worthy partner, both in vocal and acting ability. Dorothy Lee lends spritely air to the picture, and sings several effective numbers with Bert Wheeler, Georges Renevant is ideally cast as Ravehoff, who later turned out to be “Kinkajou,” the daring . mystery bandit, the capture of whom forms the themq of the productic ;. One hundred of Hollywood’s most sliapely maidens appear in the chorus of the lavish production, whose new music, new costumes and wealth of colour and beauty set a how standard in sound' pictures.
