NUKUMARU CHILDREN’S DANCE. A very successful dance was held in the Nukumaru hall on Wednesday for the school children and parents. Almost every child was in a fancy dress and under the tuition of Miss Fahey gave a very pleasing grand- march, as they danced . around instead; of - sedately marching. The hall was well filled. The best poster costume was that of Ngaire Forsyth (Milk Oaties),. the best fancy Malcolm Forsyth (Daddy Xmas) and Nolino Murphey (Washer Lady), the most original Stanley Edwards (“Ireland for Ever”) and Vivienne Edwards (Chinese Lady). Special prizes were won by Wallace McGonachy (Hindo), lan Pram (Sdagger) Alma Anstis (Wasp). Others in fancy dress were: Toni Pamon (Maori), Allan McGonachy (Nigger), Albert Hurley (Pirate), Jack Travers (Chinaman), Touhy Pram (Indian), Stan. Edwards (Irishman), Hardy Barrow (Sailor), Howard Pram (Harlequin), Joyce Anstis (Rosebud), Noline Murphey (Blue Bag), Marjorie Edwards (Chinese Girl),-Mary Barrow (Japanese), Irene Pram (Winter), Jean Reid (Night), Sylvia McCbnachy (Starlight), Dulcie Symes (Baby Blue)., Tommy Symes (Sailor), .Edna Symes (Japanese), Eileen Travers (Night). Mr. Forsyth and Mr. Dalrymple donated prizes. Friends of Mr. Lacey Craig on Tuesday gave him a farewell, prior to his departure for Taumarunur, at a dance and social evening. During supper Mr. Cow-’ dell presented Mr. Craig with a gold pencil and said how sorry all his friends were that he was leaving the district.

Amona the successful competitors at the annual competitions at Palmerston North were the following Hawera and Patea performers: Vocal solo (girls 12 to 16), D. Gilmore (Hawera), 170 points, 1; J, Knightsbridge (Hawera), 169 points, 2. Song, ladies (own selection, .New Zealand composer), Miss'M. Hamerton x (Patea), “Tangi,” 167 points, 1. In a basketball game at Hawera on Saturday afternoon a Manaia team was defeated by 19 goals to nil by the Hawera High School Old Girls’ team. The visiting team was entertained to afternoon tea after the match, Okai--awa journeyed to Riverdale and defeated the local team by 7 to nil. OKAIAWA HALL COMMITTEE. The adjourned annual meeting of the Okaiawa' Hail Committee was held on Wednesday, Mr. L. Houlahan presiding over an attendance of 12. The following committee was elected: Mrs.-W. Johnston, Mrs. W. Baker, Messrs. A. G. Robertson, D. Blair, W. F. Baker and D. Crawford. A motion was carried giving the .committee power to add to its number. Mr. E. J. Betts, one of the original trustees for the hall, who had been a former chairman for a very long period, congratulated those present, especially the ladies, for coming forward to help. . He saw no reason for pessimism and felt that under the new committee the hall 'should have a new lease of life. Various suggestions were made as to improvements that might be effected to popularise the hall, and consideration. of these will- be given by lhe new committee. . MOKOIA SPORTS. On .Wednesday the annual sports meeting ef the Mokoia and District Settlers’ Association : .will • b 0... held, at Mokoia. There is a full pi;ograipmc of athletics, Highland dancing and' novelty events and several competitions. .The committee, with Mr. D. S. Richardson as chairman and Mr. H. S. Kibblewhite as secrecy, will have everything in order to provide an interesting day’s enjoyment for spectators. Entries for the junior seven-a-sido Rugby tournament are coming in well and a large nunrber are anticipated. A 20 guinea challenge shield and gold medals to Hie winners and tho Cann Challenge Cup and silver medals to tho runners-up. Some of tho trophies are at present on view in Hawera.
