HAWERA AGAIN TO-DAY

REVIEW OF THE PROGRAMME FIRST DAY’S FORM LOOKS GOOD. GLENSTAR MAY MAKE AMENDS. RUANUI AND LADY QUEX FANCIED (By “Moturoa.”) Though actual favourites did only fairly ou Thursday, the public were not far astray, and with the first day’s form as a guide winners should not prove so difficult to aort out to-day. A few newcomers will be on the scene, but Silvermine appears likely to prove the only* one to trouble thoso that raced on Thursday. The programme opens with the

Callapat was badly beaten on Thursday and Royal Finance should again finish in front of him. Statuary appeared to benefit by the race and is a good sort when in form. The longer race would suit Tentcall better, and Paiko and Crown Link may be preferred. The issue would appear •to lie between Royal Finance and Statuary, but a preference will be given for ROYAL FINANCE.

Whenuanui won the Tougahoe Hurdles in his best etylo, but he goes .up 191 b. and weight seems to trouble him. More patiently handled on Thursday Glenatar would have been an easy winner, and if different tactics are adopted to-day a better showing can bo expected. Royal Acre races honestly and was not too lucky the finst day, while Vivo and Calitha went solidly. Whenuanui will not be so neglected to-day, but form indicates that he will have a difficult ta.sk to head off GLENSTAR.

The race the first day will work a bio- improvement in Brigadier Bill’s condition, and as he won this race last year many will be prepared to see him emulate that performance. Airtight should be too speedy for Democratic, but Waitaunalia should beat them both. Aurora Borealis lost a lot of ground on Thursday through inexperience in ’chasing, and if she improves she must be given a great chance. Birkbeek. should account for both Diana's Lad and Maidos. Brigadier Bill, Airtight, Waitaunaha, Aurora Borealis and Birkbeek will all be keenly sought in the betting, but, in form, the be«,t should be BRIGADIER BILL.

Lady Quex met with every possible obstruction on Thursday and, if Gray is in the saddle to-day, the public will overlook her failure. Benzora -and Ridgemount were backed and beaten the first day, and.in this smaller field Atholspear should hold them safe. Melissa should beat Te Atiawa this time, and it must be remembered that the Absurd mare is very well at present. The rest do nob appeal and it looks as if Lady Quex, Atholspear and Melissa wilf be in most demand and, should Gray ride the top-weight, the public will inquire most for » LADY QUEX.

Blue Paper showed that ehe had lost none of her pace when she raced on Thursday aud was only beaten in the last fifty yards. She Las 81b. more to carry to-day, but the distance is a furlong shorter and the race will improve her considerably. Callapat is speedy, and so is Great Lady, while Rule Britannia, Valstreet, Winacre and Annoyer can all move smartly. Initial speed will count a lot in the race for positions on' the bend, and Winacre and Annoyer will be hard pushed to keep near

Silvermine ran well at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, and is staying on much better this season. He ia a brilliant sprinter. With the sting out of the ground he would be in more demand to-day. The Swell was decisively beaten ou Thursday and Ruanui, who was going great guns at the end of the open sprint, will be better suited by this distance. Manly has a chance and so have Mountain Heath and Hipo. Qu form, it looks as if Silvermine and Manly will be the ones to give most trouble to RUANUI.

The distance beat Werata on Thursday, and this journey will see him to better advantage, Goldlike stays on well, and so does Brilliant Light. Merry Melody and Latakia should both hold Auctioneer safe, and then further down the list Joyspear, Tentcall and Crown Link are not to be forgotten. This will be the most difficult race of the day for the public, and the three top-weighte will find Merry Melody, Joyspear and Tentcall disputing favouritism with them. However, Goldlike, Werata and Brilliant 1 Light appear to be the class horses, and the winner will need to beat
