The by-election for the Parnell seat, which was rendered vacant by the resignationof Mr; H. R. Jenkins (Government) was held to-day. The final figures are:— W. P. Endean (Reform) ..... 4607 IV. A. When asked to comment on the result of the election last night tile Hon;'WL A. Veitch, who is in New Plymouth; said he first desired to congratulate Mr. Endean on his success. "I took part in the contest,” continued, the Minister, "and I can say it was cleanly fought from beginning to end,” Mr. Donald-was a keen, capable man , of a type that could render invaluable service to the State, and, though defeated this time, the Minister predicted that he would yet take a prominent part in the affairs of the Dominiqji. CAREER OF NEW MEMBER. — . f BARRISTER AND SPORTSMAN. Mr. Endcan is a native of the Auckland province, and is about 46 years "bf age. He is a son’ of the late Mr. John Endean, a well-known Thames and Auckland resident. Mr. Endean was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and later gained his LL.B, degree at the Auckland University College. He com- x menced practice as a barrister and solicitor in Auckland, about 21 years ago. For a time'he practised on his own account, but in 1910 he and Mr> J. A, Holloway joined in partnership, ■ from which Mr. Endcan retired about six months ago, , In sporting circles Mr. Endean is widely known, particularly in the yachting world. For the past two years he has been commodore of the Royal .New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and he has.played an important part in ensuring the success of the annual Anniversary Day regatta, having been recently* chairman of the regatta committee. During the war Mr; Endpan joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and saw service in ' European waters. He lias never previously sought political honours, but h® is known as a capable speaker, and successful m'eriiber of the'profession frbrii which he lias recently retired.
