SPRING VIOLENTLY ERUPTS
rgBSESCE OF OIL POSSIBLE. By Telegraptli.—-Press Association.' Gisborne, May 7. A sharp report and rumblings suggestive of an earthquake startled Waiinatai Valley residents yesterday. Later it was found that three or four acres round the mud springs on Mr. Savage’s property were covered to a depth of ten feet with mud from an eruption through a gas blow-out.
It is estimated that nearly a million tons of mud were thrown up by the eruption, overflowing a quarter of a mile down the hillside. The springs have always interested oil men. as the presence of gas is believed to be associated, with the existence of oil,.
