HAWERA MUNICIPAL BAND

CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE MEETS. At the monthly meeting of the Citizens’ Committee of the Hawera Municipal Band there were present Messrs E. Dixon (chairman), R. Johns, H. C. A. Fox, E. Gould, J. Kilpatrick, J. Champion and W. Hawkins (secretary). The conductor’s report stated: s “The band was on parade ten times, at seven rehearsals and the air pageant and the Anzac services at Hawera and Meremere. In addition to these the band played for two days for the Hawera Trotting Club, and both the president and vice-president congratulated the' band on its playing. At the same time one could hear expressions of approval of the music on- all sides. The role of the senior. band stands at 33 playing members and that of the junior band at 22, a total of 55 members, and all rehearsals are well attended. During the month ten members of the band assisted the Orchestral Society at its concert, a spirit .-which is to be much commended. The junior band is making good progress, but I would appeal to parents to see that the boys practice at home, as this is a great help to me. I would like to mention that our library and some instruments require protection, the back rooin now being too open.” It was decided to hold a working bee to effect repairs at the bandroom. GENERAL ITEMS. A meeting of ladies willing to assist with the supper at the Waimate Football Club 'ball next Wednesday will be held in the supper room of the Manaia Town Hall to-morrow afternoon at 2.30. Through a flame from a gas ring setting fire to a curtain the Hawera Fire Brigade was called to the residence of Mrs. F. H. Rawson, Erin Street, Hawera, yesterday morning. Before the brigade arrived, however-, the flames were practically under control through the action of Mrs. Thwaites, who threw water over the curtain with *a bucket. The ceiling and a door were slightly scorched, but little damage was done to the room. . Mrs. Thwaites was complimented on her presence of mind by members of the brigade. A donation of £5 towards the cost of entertaining school children at the 21st South Taranaki Winter Show, to be held at Hawera from June 25 to July 2, was made by Mr. J. R. Corrigan, chairman of the show company’s board of directors, on Tuesday night.

The probability of the Governor-Gen-eral, Lord Bledisloe, officially opening the 21st South Taranaki Winter Show was mentioned at a public meeting at Hawera on Tuesday night. Mr. J. B. Murdoch, chairman of the Hawera County Council and South Taranaki Electric Power Board, stated that if it were possible for the visit to be arranged the success of the show was practically ensured. A further lecture by Rev. B. Dudley, F.R.A.S., in' connection with the Manaia branch of the W.E.A-> will be given in the Manaia High School this evening, the subject being: “The Scale of the Universe and Our Place In It.” The theme will be illustrated by blackboard demonstrations. Mr. Dudley will also, in response to a request, give a full account of the huge meteoric fall in North Siberia. Weather permitting, actual observation of the lieavehs by telescope r will be made, showing lunar mountains and craters, twin suns, starclusters, and Saturn, the ringed' world. A public farewell social and presentation by the people of Hawera and district to the Rev. Robert Haddon and family, who are leaving the district, will take place in Wesley Hall, Hawera, tonight at 8 p.m. The Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey) will preside. Three hundred cases of cooking and desert apples and pears, besides household furniture and effects, will be sold by J. C. Smith at the Central Mart, Hawera, to-day.

RIVERLEA NEWS. Riverlea Old Girls played matches last week with Okaiawa and Manaia and were defeated in both. The school girls played Eltham on Saturday and were beaten by two goals to one. The school boys played a seven-a-side football match with Eltham on Saturday and .were beaten by 12 to nil. The game was very even despite the score. There was a large attendance at the first of the searon’s euchre and pingpong. The euchre prizes were won by Miss T. Gargan and Mr. W. Sangster and the ping-pong by Mr. Symes and Miss Symes. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. and Mrs. Grierson and family h/.ve left Patea for Stratford. Mrs. 11. Sutton is convalescent, the To Kiri corr—pondent of the News reports. Mr. Marcus Sutton, who was again operated on, is showing a great improvement. KING’S BIRTHDAY HOCKEY. TOURNAMENT AT HAWERA. A decision to hold a combined hockey tournament at Hawera on June 3 was reached at a meeting of combined hockey club committees at Hawera on Tuesday night. Mr. E. Urry, Eltham, presided. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Manager and chairman, Mr. C. J. McFadycn; secretaries, Misses D. Clement and N. Shannon; treasurer, Mr. C. J. McFadycn. The Referees’ Association is to be requested to provide referees for the tournament. A request is to be made to the Wanganui Association to provide lists of all hockey teams in its district. Tho following nominations were received for the protest committee: Messrs H. C. Johnston, C. Davies and C. S. Davis.
