OPERA HOUSE, HAWERA. “THE VIRGINIAN.” He sang the mere fragment of. a song in “Wolf Song”—but his talking voice was never heard by picture audiences before, until Paramount gave him the title role in the all-talking outdoors elas«ic, “The Virginian,” which comes to the Opera House for the matinee to-day at 2 p.m. and to-night at 8. His name is Gary Cooper, and he is probably the best, screen type that could be found anywhere in the ranks of film actors for the part of the lean, lanky cow-puncher hero of this famous play from the novel of the same name by Owen Wister. Cooper talks with a slow, mellow drawl in the picture. His mannerisms are those of the rangerider. His acting is real and convincing. He actually lived as a range rider before he went to Hollywood to gain renown in pictures. “The Virginian” was produced in the picturesque cattle-range country of Sonora county, California. A splendid programme of short features will also be shown. Reserve seats at Miss Blake’s, ’phone 2713
