WOMAN KILLED BY MOTOR
ACCIDENT IN WELLINGTON CITY.

At the inquest into the death of Lucy Jane Hampton, who was killed in Lambton Quay by a motor-car on March 29, evidence was given by a passenger that he and the driver had each had two drinks. The driver was careful and gave a warning at the intersections. The woman appeared to have stepped back in front of the car. Two ladies, who saw the accident, also said that the victim and the friend with her appeared to hesitate and to step back, and there was nothing to show that the motorist was at fault. The coroner remarked that these ladies had come forward in consequence of what they saw in the papers, and it would have been better if, instead of communicating with interested parties, they had gone to the coroner direct. Then there would be no suggestion that the evidence was not quite disinterested.
The verdict was that the woman died from injuries, the result of being knocked down by a ear driven by Leo Joseph Smith.
