RUGBY AT WHANGAMOMONA

MANGAONE TEAM DEFEATED. Tho Whangamomona Rugby team defeated Mangaone at Whangamomona in perfect weather on Saturday by, 20 points to three. The game was fast and interesting although tho goal kickin" was noticeably Wliangainomona’s weak point. . Mr. Gus Murphy was referee. Kicking into touch was fairly frequent and scrums were numerous, mostly for off-side play. Mangaone bustled Whangamomona to the twenty-five where a scrum was ordered following a Tine-out infringement. Mangaone kicked well down with their forwards following fast. ■ A score looked imminent but off-side play held them up and Erickson turned the. movement to advantage by landing a good pen-' alty goal. O’Dea’,s kick succeeded after ‘hitting the post, A forward pass by Mangaone saw a scrum go down and Whangamomona secure, Callaghan getting away smartly only to be recalled for a knock-on. A crooked throw-in gave Whangamomona an opportunity in the ensuing scrum but the ball was mulled and punted back to Barnes, who dashed round to score in the corner. The angle was too difficult for R. Cleland. From a mark Erickson attempted a long shot but failed to add'points? Good tackling’ stopped a determined effort by Mangaone, who were soon put on the defensive. Another forward rush was spoiled by off-side play but Whangamomona could not shake the Reds off. W. Hight broke through with the ball and Callaghan soon carried play into Mangaone territory, where he was forced out. A good. kick by Manga - one reversed the position but off-side play followed and from the scrum Whan'gamomona hooked, flashed quickly, and Callaghan ran from halfway to within striking distance, when he passed to R. Cleland, who managed to score after being tackled. The kick failed. Off-side play stopped- two . forward rushes by Whangamomona, and a third was fruitless when a forward pass was given. Further off-side play enabled Mangaone to have a shot at goal but Erickson’s kick was a trifle wide. With two minutes to go Whangamomona started a movement near half way, the ball changing hands several times before Taylor scored. The kick went- wide and the final scores were: Whangamomona 20, Mangaone 3.
