CLOSURE OF SEASON’S PLAY. The official closing of the Hawera bowling green took place on Saturday, when members of the c.ub and visiting bowlers participated in a match between teams representing the president and vice-president. Mr. G. A. Burgess, president of the Hawera club, extended a welcome to the visitors and mentioned that the club had enjoyed a successful season.

GENERAL ITEMS. Arrangements are well in hand for the second annual seven-a-side junior Rugby football tournament to be held on-the Manutahi Domain on Wednesday, Entries close to-day with Mr. M. P. Comerford, Already ten teams have’ been entered but it is expected that this will be increased to 16.. The Manutahi Shield and seven gold medals for the winning team, together with seven silver cups for the runners-up, are on exhibition in Hawera, A dance is to be held in the Manutahi hall in the evening. Basketball commenced in South Taranaki on Saturday, when the Hawera High School Old Girls’ team met and defeated the Okaiawa club at Okaiawa by 12 points to one. For the winners scores were recorded by Misses Lendrurn, Howell and Toy, while Miss Green scored Okaiawa’s goal. Mrs. S. Evans. Hawera, refereed.

Lewis gun work was carried out at a parade of the Legion of Frontiersmen at Hawera last week. Each member

handled, stripped and assembled the gun and keen interest was displayed. At future parades more advanced work will be taken, as well as troop drill and lectures.

The Auroa Hockey Club ladies are preparing enthusiastically for the dance tomorrow night. The programme will be brightened , with novelty dances, streamers and confetti and a most enjoyable evening is anticipated.

The Eltham Tennis Club’s annual ball will be held on Friday at the Eltham town hall. The committee is aiming to make the function a distinctive one, and music, floor and supper of the best are assured.

The fine spirit displayed by the Hawera Pipe Band in playing gratis at the recent gymkhana held by the Egmont A. and P. Association was the subject of congratulatory comment at the association’s meeting on Saturday. A member remarked that the pipe band was always willing to render assistance when called upon, and he had never known it to ask for payment. Permission for a fieworks company to use the Hawera showgrounds for a fireworks display on November 5, Guy Fawke’s Day, was granted by the Egmont A, and P. Association at its meeting on Saturday. The rental was fixed at £lO. Mild excitement was caused on the Normanby Road at the gates of .the Okaia’wa recreation ground during the progress of the Hawera-Okaiawa match oh Saturday. While threading a way through the parked cars a motor-cyclist and pillion rider were knocked from their machine, which careered riderless along the road for about 60 yards before crashing into the. rear of a new sedan car. The car and cycle were both damaged, but the motor-cyclists escaped unhurt. .

The annual sports of the Taw’hiti and district settlers to have been held at Hawera on Wednesday have been abandoned.
