GIFTS TO CANCER FUND HANDSOME BEQUEST PROMISED. KEEN APPRECIATION EVOKED. By Telegraph -Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the time of the recent visit to New Zealand of Dr. W. Sampson Handley, the well-known London surgeon and authority on cancer, it was announced that Mrs. T. Dwan, of Wellington, had generously given £lOOO for cancer research. It is. now announced that Mr. and Mrs. T. Dwan have donated an additional £5OO to the Wellington division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire cancer campaign. Mr. and Mrs. Dwan have also intimated to the president of the cancer campaign (Dr. J. S.-,Elliott) their intpjition to bequeath a sum of not lose than £lO,OOO to the New Zealand branch of the campaign. The gift of £5OO will be placed to the credit of the fund which is to be raised in the Wellington district. The Prime Minister has forwarded the following message, from Rotorua: “I have just heard with great pleasure of the very generous donations which Mr. and Mrs. T. Dwan, of Wellington, have provided in connection with the British Empire cancer campaign. The recent gifts of £lOOO by them to the New Zealand movement and of £5OO to the Wellington centre have afforded evidence of their practical sympathy with the earnest efforts now being put in hand to deal with a very difficult problem. The further intimation that Mr. and Mrs. Dwan will make provision for not less than an additional bequest of £lO,OOO towards the fund in New Zealand is worthy of the whole-hearted gratitude of the citizens of this Dominion, arid I desira to express on behalf of the' Government our keen appreciation of Mr. and Mrs. Dwan’s publicspirited benevolence. Their action in this matter indeed affords a splendid example to those who have means and desire to contribute to come forward and generously support so worthy . a cause, which aims at the alleviation of widespread suffering and the elimination of a scourge whose increasing ravages wive ground for serious anxiety not D only in 'our own midst, but also in other countries of the world.”
