CALEDONIAN SPORTS

PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW. It is a few years since New Plymouth has had a Caledonian afternoon, but those in charge of tho programme of sport for Saturday afternoon have made the wait worth while. The Caledonian societies in tho province combined a few years, ago, and with a united front - decided to hold the annual gathering in the provincial towns in turn. This year New Plymouth has been allocated the games, and to ensure the success of the day, the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club undertook the . arrangements for its events and the League Cycling Club for its professional cycle events, leaving the society’s office bearers unhindered in the carrying out of their Highland programme. , R. A. Rose, New Zealand’s great distance runner, is appearing for the first time in New Plymouth; Stan Lay, New Zealand Olympic representative, is appearing in several events, but his drawing card is the javelin. Cycling, both professional and. amateur. j© much in favour just now, and the wheel races are very well patronised, the one mile professional rac* having to te run in heats. Of course, the skirl of the pipes and the swing of the dancing kilt will add to the day—no heart does not beat the quicker at their sound and sight. Piping and dancing will be on the swing all the afternoon, fifteen events having to be judged. Arrangements have been made for an ingleside in the Agricultural Hall in the evening. Its enjoyable predecessors are sufficient advertisement for its success. Pipers D. Matheson and A. McGowan (Auckland), J. Cameron (Mataura) and Messrs. McCowan and Thodey (dancers) arrived in New Plymouth last night. Misses Gladys Smyth • (Wellington), Doris Schapelski (Feilding), Gwenith McNaughton and Frcgborn (Auckland) will arrive to-morrow with Mr. D. Bothwell (Masterton).
