TUBERCULOSIS CAMPAIGN

ASSISTANCE GIVEN THE FUND. APPEAL MADE BY MINISTER. By Telegraph- — Press Association Wellington, Last Night. Need for the establishment of a national anti-tuberculosis association in New Zealand was emphasised by the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, to-day-in an announcement that with a view to assisting the sale of the special charity stamps issued in connection with the campaign against tuberculosis. The use of the whole of the picture screens of Messrs Fuller and Hayward’s circuit had been offered free for advertising the Christmas seal scheme.

The Minister said he had accepted the offer. He understood about G 6 theatres comprised the circuit and the advertising space on the screens would be available for about a month.

Referring to the need for funds to fight tuberculosis and alleviate the sufferings of subjects, the Minister drew attention to the plight of young men or women who after a year or two >n a sanatorium found it difficult to return to the employment they were compelled to leave when they contracted the complaint. It frequently happened, he said, that after so long a period of enforced idleness the personal resources of the patients were exhausted and in desperation they were forced into such unsuitable work as brought about a recurrence of the disease. Thus was undone all the good work accomplished in a long fight for health and ultimately a return to a sanatorium was inevitable. A number of such cases, said Mr.. Stall worthy, had been brought under his notice and he was aiming at organised relief by the development of the Christmas seal fund and the establishment of a national anti-tuberculosis association with branches at least in the larger centres. The Minister added that the special stamps would be on sale at all post offices for several weeks yet.
