McGregor and Miss M. Cave, Eltham. Boys’ Singles.—A. Dickie, Waverley. Girls’ Singles.—Miss Jean Ward. Prinulry schools, boys’ singles— M. Donnelly, Eltham. Primary schools, girls’ singles.—M. Dickie, Waverley. Tho winners of tho handicap events are:—

Men’s A Grade Singles.-—J. J. McCarthy, Hawera. Men’s B Grade Singles—Gordon Surgenor, Otakeho. Men’s Doubles.—C, J. Wills and J. G. Gibbs, Alton. Ladies’ Singles.—Miss N. Bell, Wellington. Ladies’ Doubles—Mrs. A. Bell and Miss N. Bell, Wellington. Combined Doubles.—C. Goddard and Mrs. A. Bell, Wellington. The best and brightest of tennis was seen at the Hawera club’s courts yesterday when the tournament was brought to a successful conclusion. A cloudy sky and light showers early in the day gave place to ideal conditions. From tho commencement of play a high standard was maintained. The completion of the earlier rounds had eliminated the weaker players and yesterday’s play was confined almost to semi-final-ists and finalists, who provided some thrilling encounters for tho large number of spectators. The only event in the tournament not completed was the ladies’ championship singles in which Miss Ward, Stratford, and Miss Cave, Eltham, have each won a set. The final set will be played later. v Tho cups and trophies were presented by Mr. U. D. Dickie, tho club’s patron, who congratulated the president and the committee upon the excellent conduct and the success of tho tournament; Mr. Judies and the umpires for their assistance.

Mrs. R. 11. Lecce, wife of the president, handed the trophies to the successful contestants. The best exhibition of the day was tho men’s championship doubles final between M. L. Lampe and H. Wills and B. and J. McCarthy. The McCarthys won the first game but Lampe and Wills by superior driving took tho next two. Although their opponents captured the fourth and seventh games Lampe and Wills had little trouble in establishing a 5—3 lead. The ninth and tenth games proved exciting, each pair winning one to give Lampe and Wills the first set. By superior courtcraft and more accurate driving Lampe and Wills won the second and third sets with the loss of two games in each set. Wills’ work at the net and Lampe’s stinging drives found the weak spots in their opponents’ armour. The McCarthys put up a splendid fight and several of the games were keenly contested before tho tactics of tho winners prevailed. > The final of the ladies’ singles championship between Miss Cave and Miss Ward, though unfinished, was an interesting contest characterised chiefly by hard driving and brilliant flashes of net play both players seeming content to play a solid rather than a spectacular game. ■ -

Tho same players had a hard tussle with Misses A. and J. Hicks in the final ,of tho ladies’ championship doubles. Each pair won a set by 6—3 before Misses Ward and Cave triumphed in the third set by 6 —l. Tho final of the combined championship doubles between McGregor' and Miss Cave and J. McCarthy and Miss J. Hicks looked like a hollow victory for the former pair until about half way through the second set. In tho first set McGregor and Miss Cave early established a 4—l lead, which their opponents reduced by two games. McGregor and Miss Cave had no difficulty, however, in annexing tho next two games and the set. With six l games played in the second set McGregor and Miss Cave had a 4—2 had, but at the tenth game McCarthy and Miss Hicks had equalised. Thereafter excitement ran high until McGregor and Miss Cave ran out winners at 11—9.

Surgenor took A. Dickie to 4 all in the first set of the boys’ championship singles before Dickie captured the set. The second set Dickie found much easier. Miss Jean Ward gave a sterling exhibition against Miss A. Graham in the final of tho girls’ championship singles. She rarely allowed the games to go to tho advantage stage. The diminutive M. Donnelly had little, difficulty in defeating S. McKay in the primary schools boys’ singles championship final by 1) —2, while Miss M. Dickie ran out a winner with a similar score in the girls’ final against Miss A. Lee. The handicap events wer<s well contested, particular interest attaching to the success of Mrs. and Miss Bell, who won the ladies’ doubles. Miss Bell won tho ladies’ singles event, and Mrs. Bell and C. Goddard annexed tho combined doubles. Gordon Surgenor’s win against C. G. Swinburne, Wellington, was another meritorious performance.
