CAN HONOUR WIN DERBY?!

DECISIVE WIN AT RICCARTON HISTORY FAVOURS DOUBLE WINS. FAVOURITE WILL BE EXTENDED (By “Moturoa.”) To-morrow the public will be in a quandary. “Can Honour win the Great Northern Derby after winning the New Zealand Derby?” That will be th® catch phrase. ■■ Well, it is not unusual . for the winner of the Derby at Riccarton to annex the blue riband at Ellerslie, and in the present century —the period of 29 years —no less than 14 horses have taken the dual honour. The winners in that period have been Renown, Menschikoff, Zimmerman, Husbandman, Danube, Bon Reve, Chereibine, Desert Gold, Estland, Gloaming, Winning Hit, Enthusiasm, Count Cavour and Commendation. Flying Prince scoped over a mile on .Monday and Eaglet ran well. She won the Oaks at Riceartoh’ and was third in the Derby. Count Palatine was beaten but not disgraced in the Queen’s Plate, and not many will forget his second in the New Zealand Derby. Duellona won over ten furlongs on Saturday under a welter weight, and that

should be a good Derby trial. From the start tire public have asked for better than Honour, who was third Tn the A.J.C. Derby to Phar r Lap and Carradale and won the New „ Zealand Derby with consummate ease. \ He has been training on well since \ then and many expect Mr. Greenwood, ' who has already won the Great North- . ern Derby with Gloaming, Cherubini and Danube, to go near taking the cov-• . eted honours to-morro'w. Surely his . candidate was well enough named?. Jaloux stays on well,' but Hunting Cry, whose victories in the Railway ’ Handicap and the King’s Plate showed exceptional brilliance, will carry a lot • ’ of money to-morrow.
