WREATH OF REMEMBRANCE

WORK OF THE VICTORIA LEAGUE,

PRESERVING THE FLOWERS IN ICE

The wreath 1 of remembrance from the Victoria Leagues of New Zealand to be placed on the cenotaph at London next Anzac Day has been made to the order of the New Plymouth branch of the league, and yesterday was taken by the president (Mrs. C. H. Burgess), to be cased in ice for transport by Borthwick’s, at Waitara. The Vreath, which was made by Mrs. Stewart, is a beautiful design in native fern, shrubs and flowers. It has the following inscription: “Anzac Day. In remembrance from the Victoria Leagues of New Zealand. Christchurch, Auckland, Wanganui, Dunedin, Wellington, Gisborne, New Plymouth.” The wreath, which is four feet in circumference, is tied with red, white and blue ribbons. Altogether 69 different varieties of plants were used in the wreath, including koromiko, pohutukawa, rata and alearia. All the plants were obtained from the nursery of Messrs. Duncan and Davies except the pohutukawa, which was given by Messrs. W. J. Chaney and A. Avery. 1 The wreath will be placed on the cenotaph in its solid block of ice. The ice gradually melts and slips .away, leaving the wreath in its natural beauty. The shrubs and leaves will be well preserved and will last a week from tha-time they are placed on the cenotaph without drooping or fading.
