TENNIS AT HAWERA

PROGRESS OF TOURNAMENT NEARING THE FINAL STAGES. MEN’S SINGLES TO BARKMAN. The Hawera Tennis Club's tournament advanced a further stage on Saturday, despite the presence of a tricky wind and threatening rain. Good fortune has smiled on tno tournament almost throughout, and fine weather to-day is now all that is required to bring to a successful conclusion what is undoubtedly one of the most successful tournaments the club has yet held. The presence of the cream of Taranaki and \\ auganui players, as well as a number oi visitors from other parts of the Dominion, has sustained keen interest throughout, and appreciation of the high standard of play was manifested by the large number of spectators on Saturday.

Now that the weaker players have been eliminated almost every game provides sparkling tennis, and is well worth watching, the best of tiie matches being staged on the court nearest the pavilion. To-day's play should provide the best exhibitions of the tournament. Championship play commences at 11 o’clock. The final of the mens singles championship between M. L. Lampe (Wanganui) and N. B. Barkman (Wanganui) provided a feast of sparkling tennis, and an unexpected victory for Barkman, the score being o—6,0 —6, 6 —l, 6—l. By superior driving, placing and courteralt, Lampe won the first set with ease, his opponent making a showing in only the first and second games, it seemed a foregone conclusion that the match would be Lampe’s, but Barkmau came to light and captured the next two sets. Even play characterised the second set until the score was 4—4, when Barkman drew away to win the next two games aud the set. The games in the third set were very evenly contested, most of them going to several deuces until Parkman won ail except one. Both men played a good, steady game throughout, serving, driving and volleying consistently well. Iu the first set Barkman was undoubtedly outgeneralled by Lampe, who seemed to find every weak spot in Barkman’s game. A tricky wind affected the game, but in spite of that some remarkable recoveries were made from apparently hopeless positions. Barkman well deserved his win after the result of the first set, and is undoubtedly amongst the first flight of the Dominion’s players.
