ENGLISH BOWLING GOOD

CANTERBURY IN TROUBLE SIDE HAS TO FOLLOW ON. DRAW SECURED AGAINST M.C.C. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The cricket match between the English team and Canterbury, begun yesterday, ended in a draw, very much in favour of the M.C.C. side. _ The match opened on a wicket which had dried fairly well after the recent rain. Gilligan, winning the toss, decided to bat. Notwithstanding an excellent start by Gilligan and Dawson, who put ou 7o for the first wicket, Merritt and Simmonds bowled so well that six were down for 113. Nicholls and Worthington saved the situation for England but they were repeatedly let off in the field, Nicholls being missed three times and Worthington twice. Thanks to this carelessness they were allowed to double the score before Worthington was caught, and at the end of the day the total had reached nine wickets for 248 runs. The M.C.C. innings ended in a few minutes this morning, after one run had been added to the overnight total, the innings closing for 249. The wicket was in perfect order and played well until the drawing of stumps. Canterbury’s first innings produced the poor total of 144. The opening pair, Cromb and Allen, were separated when they had made only four runs, Cromb being clean bowled by Nicholls. Talbot followed, but he also was unhappy facing Nicholls’ fast ones, and he eventually played one on after scoring eight, with the total at 27. Page followed and the scoring rate increased. Rage played all the bowling resolutely, and Allen seemed to profit by his example. Allen had the ill-luck to be run out after making 19. Roberts joined Page and the pair carried the score to 98 at the luncheon adjournment. On resuming Nicholls’ first over proved fatal to Page, the fast bowler knocking his off stump out of the ground. Page had scored 26. Hamilton ha,d made a couple when his partner, Roberts, was bowled by Barratt with . a leg break. Lester stayed with Hamilton long enough to bring the total to 121, when Hamilton lifted a ball to Gilligan at cover, the English captain making a fine catch. Of the remaining batsmen Powell was the only one who could play the bowling with surance.Contrary to expectations and much to the disappointment of the crowd, Gilligan sent the home side in again. Cromb and Allen again opened for Canterbury to the bowling of Nicholls and Worthington. Allen was the first victim, 1.b.w., to Nicholls. Talbot and Cromb raised the total to 36, when Talbot felt for a rising ball to the off and was caught at the wickets. Page joined Cromb and began at once to play the bowling confidently. The total was in the forties when Duleepsinhji came on. Page treated the slow bowler severely, scoring a four for an off drive, two sixes for hits over the long on boundary, and a single off tho first over. Duleepsinhji bowled three overs at a cost of 37 runs and then was taken off. Cromb was caught brilliantly at the wicket off Worthington with the total at 91. It was a magnificent catch on the leg side. Page and Roberts scored steadily off all the bowling. Eventually Page fell to Earl, caught and bowled for 86. His innings was by far the best of the whole match, his 86 taking him 68 minutes. Hamilton joined Roberts, and with Page gone Gilligan gave Duleepsinhji another turn with the ball. His second ball, a full toss, Hamilton hit into Nicholls’ hands at mid-on, and eight wickets were down for 162. Duleepsinhji, whose bowling did not look difficult, took four wickets. Before time was called in his second attempt he bowled four overs for 12 runs and four wickets. Scores:—
