GENERAL ITEMS. .The commencement of the rush of heavy Christmas railway passenger traffic was the cause of the late departure of the south-bound mail train from Hawera on Saturday morning. The fine weather and the breaking-up of schools on Friday accounted for the large number of travellers bound for other towns and holiday resorts. The train consisted of 1G cars, including postal and guard’s vans.

The pupils of the Hawera High School who took speaking parts in the operetta “A Kiss for Cinderella,” at the school break-up concert on Friday evening were: Cinderella (Emma Thomson), Godmother (Jean McNeill), Prince Hard to Please (Neal Instone). The King (Lyall Pacey), The Queen (Nancy Gray), Lord Times (Frank .Sargent), Lord Mayor (Barry Thomas), The Censor (Ernest Lee), The Minister (John Emmitt). The babies were Lorna Campbell (French), Barbara Rawson (English). Joan Thomas (Belgian), and Mary Boyle (Russian). Susie Saunders and Lennie Guise took the part of pages and Lucy Cropton and Barbara Woods were cast as the “ugly” sisters. The clerical staff of the Hawera County Council have been granted Christmas holidays from Saturday last until Monday, January 13, 1930.
