WEST END SCHOOL

MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING. The West End (New Plymouth) School Committee on Thursday night received from the headmaster, Mr. J. E. Shimmin, a report that h® calculated the roll number for next year would be about 430 and the addition of 30 new pupils would bring the school to the same attendance as this year. Misses Kurta and Nicholson, probationary assistants, were leaving the school, as were Miss Oliver and Mr. Shepherd, probationers who were to go to the Auckland Training College. The primary schoolboys’ cricket championship had been won by the school. Meredith won the medal donated by Mr. Ferry. His scoring average was 14. There was disappointment among parents that they had not had any break-ing-up ceremony, said the chairman. He was sorry he had not consulted the headmaster in this connection. The school had been presented with a replica by the donors of the Weston Shield. The trophy was engraved:— “Primary school girls’ relay race, New Plymouth. Presented to the West End school by the donors of the Weston Shield in commemoration of the school having won the primary school girls’ relay race for eight years in succession, 1921-1929.” The secretary reported receiving a donation of £1 Is towards the school ground fund. The school committee, in conjunction with Mesdaines Brash, Charters, McDonald, Harkness and Malcolm, met as the cubs’ and scouts’ committees. Concern was expressed at the fact that there was no report from either the cubmaster or scoutmaster. The visiting committee for the cubs reported that the attendance was good, never below 20. The cubs and scouts representative for New Plymouth gave a concert over the wireless during the week. The chanties were delightful and praise and thanks were due Mr. Coleman. The treasurer reported £9 16s Id in the bank and 4s in hand.
